The titles don't seem to have any kind of consistent meaning. Some are descriptive of the people they're above, and others are simply nonsensical.

[Kanaya is becoming increasingly convinced that her first quest needs to be making a sign about this curse and placing it in the plaza.]

It does seem to be a game of sorts, as many people have acquired classes and abilities they didn't previously have. I've also seen a few joining into parties and wandering around in search of quests.

...And you very well might be a ninja. I've already seen someone else whose new class was ninja.
