Oh! I hope your student can realize how valuable she is as a person...embrace her skills as well as moving forward on what she finds challenging. Poor kid putting that much pressure on herself. Sigh.

I love the comparison here, and you make valid points. I adore gymnastics. Everyone has their specialty and talents, and I hope your student realizes her worth.

Very realistic! My reading class utilizes the Language Live curriculum, which has a video in the start-up unit that compares practice in the arts and sports to the practice needed to get better at reading much like how the teacher does here.

My first year teaching, I had a 9th grade student who struggled academically despite the effort she put in, but was very social and a dancer. Her dream was to teach others to dance and hopefully run her own studio, but her mother refused to approve the modifications she needed because she was "college bound." It's actually one of the reasons I chose to leave high school and, unfortunately, I don't know what happened to her.

I've never heard of that curriculum but the start up unit makes sense.

I hope she succeeded in her dreams!
