Navy blue socks? Are you wearing navy shoes??

...you do know that men are supposed to match dress socks to shoes and belt color, not slacks, right?

Incorrect! Sock color should almost always always match the trousers, less you end up with a boot effect with the shoe and sock matching. see below:

Exhibit A

Exhibit B

Exhibit C (see item #5)

However, all rules have exceptions. With a navy suit, black socks would be okay in a pinch because they are both dark colors. But, for example, if I were wearing dark brown shoes, dark brown socks against a navy trouser would look kinda odd. In that case matching the pants would be a better choice.

Sometimes the rule should never be broken as in the case of khaki pants, where black sock with a black shoe is just way too much contrast.

Plus, matching your sock to your trouser helps your shoe stand out, which is always a good thing (so long as you have shoes that are worth standing out!)

Casual wear is a different ballgame. If I'm wearing black dress shoes with jeans I always go with black or other-colored socks, sometimes even a snazzy red pair I got from the Gap.

*cough* professional costume designer *cough*

Trust me. The standard today is match socks to shoes.

P.S. You should never wear dark brown shoes with Navy!!

It might be the norm to match socks to shoes, but that doesn't make it right! :)
