k.. so i had to brush up on my filipino history. i didn't want to perpetuate things and give you wrong information. i have limited knowledge about the culture, but i'll give it a go..
filipinas is a spanish term (las Islas Filipinas = the Philippine Islands). philippines is an american term. there is no F or "Ph" in the filipino alphabet, so pilipinas would be the proper term. hence why people use the term pilipino (i've moreso heard this in the philippines than here in the states).
filipino is widely accepted/used probably because of the deep spanish roots. filipino was first used to refer to the spanish that were born in the philippines. eventually it was used to refer to the indigenous people as well.
you'll find filipino, filipina, philippines all in the dictionary, but not philipino. i don't know if you can understand tagalog, but here's the general picture
