It's a fact: The deeper astronomers gaze into the cosmos, the more they find it's a bizarre and violent universe.  I think we can all agree on that.  But why are we struck by the strangeness of things when it's all we know?  What do we keep comparing our experience to?  Is it that life is both chaotic and rational and doesn't fit nicely into any of ( Read more... )

ive thought about this a lot and i think it goes something like...we're taught to pattern our thoughts and also seek out patterns in life and when things fall out of pattern into a bona fide state of chaos, it intrigues us...perhaps, if only to rationalise by finding some logic (aka pattern).
we're not happy beings until we can understand things, it seems.
mystery in and of itself is just too much for us to accept.

man, we need to get together, have a whiskey and a nice long chat in big-necked, ski sweaters.

The only thing I need to add to this scenario would be hickeys hidden under the big-neckedness of the sweaters.

AND I thought of a second thing: when you come to visit I need a good long while to catch up with you in person, mano-a-mano, but I also need to introduce you around to all my friends again. I had such a bloody fantastic time last night, I can't even tell you. Ever have those moments when you just start laughing, you're so overwhelmed by joy - all because of the alchemy of the people around you? This feeling came over me long before I was overcome by intoxicants.
