Re: Education - we've never had any sort of debate over a "voucher" system here, but the way I see it I'd be opposed to it because it involves the state sponsoring private enterprise. In my opinion, the state should only give funds to state-run or non-profit educational institutions (for example, to educational institutions for those with non-mainstream beliefs). Schools with exorbitant fees that are run as businesses only increase social stratification, and in a society where the ideal is equality between all, one shouldn't be educationally disadvantaged by whether or not one is born into wealth or not - and therefore the state should not financially support such organizations

The problem with education funding is that it's just heinously expensive to fund very good programs. The US's university system is generally considered to be one of the best, if not the best, in the world. Every year thousands and thousands of foreign students compete for precious few places for foreigners at our universities. The weird thing is, despite it costing as much as it does, the actual expenditures per student at most private universities here is vastly greater than tuition... often twice as much or more

I came across this entry by accident when you wrote it, when I saw you on the Wesleyan 09 community or something (Somehow you also knew Stina Voonasis- I also sent stuff to you long ago about becoming a member of the Argus staff)

What course was this, about the different views on education?

Also, at the time I shied away from the Argus stuff because I was in a rather depressive swing and believed myself to be capable of nothing. I realize the positions are probably filled now and you can't hire me- hell, it's the summer! But I totally want to be immersed in the whole Argus experience... how do the internet and paper publication staff members interract?
