CCD abuse

I'm beginning to become annoyed by digital cameras. I don't have one of my own and I don't want one, at this point. I've noticed a disturbing trend whereby many people become so fixated on taking pictures of everything that they forget to experience whatever it is they're photographing ( Read more... )

i love photography. id [almost] kill for one of those 700+ dollar canon rebel jobs or a nikkon with real manual controls and at least 7 MP. one of the kids in my studio had one of thoe, they are beautiful. i'll live with my compact 3 mp point and shoot though, maybe one day when I have the dough i'll be able to indulge in a real camera.

Sometimes it's just nice to have things documented-- your memories don't last forever.

But I totally agree with you in some ways... I've taken a lot of pictures (biggest understatement ever) and actually started to get bored with it after I took a digital photography class and realized how that is different than just pointing and clicking.

Cell phone cameras do suck though. But what's wrong with taking pictures of everything that's happening to you?

I hear you, man.

But the question is whether or not the people taking pictures of the art would get it anyway if they *didn't* have the camera.

Also, I'm all for the proliferation of bad photography.
Because it also gives rise to new ways of making *good* photography.

my two cents.

Just to nitpick needlessly, some people are seriously concerned about early onset dementia/Alzheimer's and feel the need to create physical records of every memory.

i definitely agree with everything you said about digital cameras BUT

Photography used to be a real art form because not everyone could go to Best Buy and snag a $30 memory stick and stuff it full of 400 72-dpi pictures of their weekend in East Podunk.

doesn't everyone have access to a paper and pencil? does that make drawing not an art form?
everyone has access to trash. are people who make art from trash not artists?

juuuuuuuuust being difficult. but i definitely don't understand the photos at art museums phenomenon. or video for that matter. are you going to watch that video? seriously? if so, that's ridiculous. i can't imagine a person actually watching video taken at an art gallery.
