My understanding is that both Iowa and general polls show a near dead-heat between the three "top" candidates with everyone else pretty far behind, although it would certainly be interesting if Richardson or Chris Dodd made a surprise showing. He's an intriguing candidate, but what ultimately seems to have killed him is his fairly off-the-wall remarks early on in the campaign, including his conciliatory remarks about Don Imus, and claiming that God wants Iowa to have the first primary (I happen to disagree strongly with IA and NH asserting some God-given right to be first). He also once claimed to be simultaneously a Yankees and Red Sox fan. I mean, come on -- and he's from New Mexico! I think the biggest danger about Edwards is the inherent divisiveness of the "Two Americas" thing. It sounds like an inherent truth to folks like you and me, but I think to center- and center-right voters it may come across as class warfare, defeatist, or just plain un-American.
