Charles/Erik closeted small town BIG ASS PROMPTqueen_subtleSeptember 17 2011, 07:22:05 UTC
So Charles grows up in a very conservative small town, where he's struggling with being a homosexual. He is embarassed by it, and thinks he's the only one. Cue the angry farmer's son Erik, one of the most popular kids at school, star football player or some other stereotypical douche position. Charles is envious of him because he seems to have the perfect life and he is what Charles wishes he could be--manly manly. So he can never figure out why he's so angry. And why he seems to hate him. He develops a crush he tries to hide, but eventually the two get alone and Erik takes in totally hot angry man shmex.(Um, I want them to be seniors so they don't have to be underage, but if you choose not to, whatevs) Charles' feelings only grow stronger, but Erik hates being this way and denies his attraction towards him, all the time repeatedly using him for angry sex. Charles of course, is stressed out by this and eventually wants to leave him, but although Erik is in the closet, is growing increasingly possessive. Whether or not Erik finds out

Nnnngggh, possessive, bastard Erik gets me going so good. I think there should be a dub-con warning in there though since Charles wanna leave and Erik keeps stopping him.

I am really tempted to give this a try (it reminds me of a book I love), but had a couple of clarifying questions:
Is Charles out and struggling in the small town setting, or is it just a self-realization? (I assumed initially that he wouldn't be out, but I wanted to double check to make sure I'm not interpreting it incorrectly.)
Do you have a preference for time period? (Still in the 60s? Another time entirely?)

Ok, let me start by saying, I just about had a seizure when I saw you were considering this! OMFG thanks so much! And what's that book called, btw? Um, I think I'd like it if Charles was in the closet as well, but eventually because he's growing feelings for Erik, he wants to come out, which is why when Erik keeps trying to hide it he starts to want to leave, and then there's that whole push-pull possessiveness I wrote in the prompt.

I hope I can produce something! I really, really want to give it a try; and I can definitely work with that, since it's pretty much what I had in mind, I just wanted to check to make sure that was the direction you wanted. :D
The book I'm thinking of is Dream Boy by Jim Grimsley (which I highly recommend, all the time). It's set in a small, rural Southern town and is a developing love story between two boys under the constrictions of that setting. One of the main characters is rather possessive of the other in a "we're not in a relationship, but don't do this with anyone else" sort-of way. There's obviously differences between the book and the prompt regarding plot/the characters themselves, but the base line of struggling to accept one's sexual identity in a small, closeted town setting is what brought it to mind.
Um, sorry for the tangent, but it's one of those novels that left me with a lot of feelings.

I definitely recommend it! Though as a warning, it's incredibly heart-breaking (and when/if I write this, it probably um, won't be as heart-breaking overall?).
Re: OP herequeen_subtleSeptember 21 2011, 03:31:01 UTC
YEAH. The ending will definitely, definitely not be the same, if I can swing this. Because um, I think I might break myself too much if I wrote it like that.

Just came across this prompt and haven't read the fill yet, but thought I'd say something about the time period. Homophobia was pretty rampant in small towns during the 60s (if I recall correctly, Brokeback Mountain is set in the early 60s). I'd totally understand if Erik wanted to stay in the closet because it could get dangerous for him otherwise.

There would be obvious differences from the book, but um, yeah. I will have to try once I get a couple other writing projects wrapped up. >>

And 60s is fine, but most of it is up to you!

*ahem* But anything you plan on writing it is just fine, I just really want you to fill it--almost none of my prompts ever get filled unfortunately.
