His only secret? Charles Xavier, the human he's kept locked in his bedroom ever since his right-hand woman, Mystique, came to him pleading for mercy for her stepbrother, who accepted her mutant form and protected her as a child. The human he started fucking after Mystique was killed in battle, despite the guilt he feels at contaminating even this last promise to the woman who was integral to his life's work and happiness.

I like to think that a lot of Erik's problem is that he doesn't really know any humans, and has never let himself get to know any of them, except for Charles. And it's easier for him to convince himself Charles is an exception than that his whole philosophy is wrong. Remember that in this AU he never met mutant!Charles to try and steer him away from his POV.
I know what you mean - especially when he is trying so hard to be good to Charles, as much as he can. Thank you, I'm really glad you're enjoying it :)

XI
He brings Charles fruit, when he can, plucked fresh from the marketplaces of the cities he visits, from the exotic to the banal; dragonfruit, strawberries from a trip to London, grapes, mangoes from India, apples, once, though he has always found them insipid. The day he brings Charles a pomegranate, ripe and splitting with juice and glistening seeds, the human takes it from his hands and laughs and laughs and laughs, his smooth voice cracked and unnerving.

When Erik wakes in the middle of the night Charles is sitting at the windowseat again, the curtain drawn back to show the stars like pinpricks in the pitch black sky, knees hugged to his chest as he stares at the outside world, breath half-fogged in the cold air. When Erik strains to hear he catches Charles’ murmur, but only just, reading his lips more than listening as he mutters, “I count the dismal time by months and years, Since last I felt the green sward under foot, And the great breath of all things summer.”
“What’s that?” Erik asks, but Charles doesn’t reply.

It is obvious from Charles’ face that he doesn’t want to believe it; he stands there, fuming and shaking, hands clenched into fists at his sides before eventually he deflates under Erik’s unrelenting gaze, shrinking in on himself and bringing up a hand to wipe across his face before reaching for the fork. “Thank you for breakfast,” he says, but even Charles’ pretty manners can’t make it sound sincere

Oh meh Gawd, Erik you're such a fucking hypocrite, jesus man. smh. I really love how you write their relationship, and that's all I can say without squeeing like a fangirl.

Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying it :) I think the real problem Erik has is that he's never let himself get close to a human after what happened in his childhood, except for Charles, and it's easier to convince himself Charles is an exception rather than change his point of view about them all. He's never had anyone shake him up and out of his mental rut because he never met mutant!Charles to do it.

The psychology of the thing is what interested me in this fill in the first place really, so I'm glad that's working for you (and that you like my answers!) I'm hoping to address the Lima syndrome side of things too. Soon so i hope you'll enjoy that too.

Oh my goodness, this premise is fascinating. I can understand the Stockholm Syndrome Charles has going on there, whilst still wanting to go outside. God Erik, threatening Charles with the dangers outside...

Huh. If I were writing this, I'd make Charles attempt suicide.
I mean, I just got a very powerful feeling that I would. Charles is obviously miserable and Erik is just as obviously not taking him seriously. (He knows Charls is unhappy, but he's... yeah. selfish.)
And the description of Erik's treatment at Shaw's hands and how it makes Erik think he's being kind to Charles... that's just one of those gut-punches that makes you unable to really dislike him for what he's doing. Really really.
And, Charles, you well-read, beautifully depressed gorgeous pretty.

I don't want to give away my plans quite yet (and of course they may yet change!) but there are capital-R Reasons why things have ended up where they are, and Erik is being selfish but he's also trying to do the best he can with a bad situation. From his point of view it really would be far too dangerous to let Charles out, no matter what Charles wants, and he wants to keep him safe.
And part of the Stockholm Syndrome Charles is suffering from - and the Lima Syndrome Erik has got in spades - is that sometimes they are very happy, like when they're playing chess together. It's the normalisation of his way of living that Charles is trying to fight off because he knows what is happening but even so he can't just hate Erik. It's an unhealthy kind of love but it is there.
Disclaimer: NOT OP but I do, do love a fill.
