Erik/Charles: postapocalyptic au anonymous June 11 2011, 00:17:27 UTC
Nuclear, biological and/or chemical warfare ended up ravaging the planet, before Erik and Charles ever met. Only some mutants -- along with a few humans -- survived. After quite a while of having to survive alone (or with others, author's choice), Erik and Charles meet, and find renewed hope in their growing relationship and the new society they decide to build.

In Strasbourg they break into another hotel and Sebastian goes out to try to find a way out of Strasbourg as quickly as possible. Erik raids the kitchens. Dust has settled on all the worktops but the tinned food is as good as ever. Tinned pears and a couple of tins of beans will get them through another day. Erik leaves the other tins for anyone else who might be alive to find them. They’re too heavy to carry more than a couple each, anyway ( ... )

Charles lets the knowledge that he is one of the mutants Moira has been searching for filter into her brain slowly. It is totally unethical“I’ll care about ethics when you are safe,” Charles tells Raven. She clicks her tongue and glares at him, and he just turns back to Moira. “If we are to help you, Moira, we need to get back ( ... )

It’s still light when they reach Calais, so they drive down to the port and watch their boat come in. It lurches left and right but finally docks ( ... )

Southampton is busier than Oxford. People congregate around the ports as if they’re hoping help is going to come from somewhere. And that really is what they’re hoping. Endlessly. Charles hears it so often in other people’s heads that he begins to wonder if he might be starting to believe it ( ... )

OP. This is still amazing. I love the picture you're painting of the world in chaos and them gathered together to help each other. It's going to be amazing to see what happens, to all of them! I wonder what America will be like, and whether they'll make it there...

They dock in Dover at 10am the next morning. There are five harrowed looking people standing on the docks waiting for them (or for their boat) and when they step ashore they are begged for information. The soldiers look dazed and unable to comprehend that this is their country at all, so Erik steps between them and the people who have come to meet them and answers their questions. They ask about Barcelona and then Cyprus, and when he can’t tell them anything they ask where he has come from and he tells them about the shell that was Germany. From what they say, Britain has fared little better.

“We should give up on the continent.” One of them, a man of about forty, says.

“Oh yeah,” another man says, who looks as though he could be the first man’s brother or maybe his son. “Because crossing the Atlantic’s exactly what we need on top of everything else ( ... )

“Charles.” Raven says, passing him some soup. Cream of mushroom. She sits on the arm of the armchair he’s sitting in and leans down and into his space to look at him carefully. “Why are we going back? And why do we need Moira?”

He watches her until she nudges his shin with her foot and nods to his soup. He studies that instead as he tries to think of how best to answer her. “For my mother,” He says. “And to get you safe.” He has a mouthful of soup while he thinks over the second question. “And we need Moira because I don’t believe the stories about America and I think a CIA agent might just be useful. In getting us in, if nothing else. She’s resourceful and she... may still have some clout where it counts. We don’t know that their government has crumbled.”

“So... nothing to do with how she needs our help.” Raven says, not sounding convinced.

“An added bonus.” Charles says. “My priority has always been, and will always be, your safety. Moira is a good woman and I will help her where I can ( ... )

The day before the ship is supposed to arrive, Charles and Moira go to the nearest group of shops and stock up on everything they think they might need for the journey. At 6am the next morning they walk down to the docks. The number of people must have doubled in three days and it’s a little awe inspiring that no organisation at all can still bring about a kind of organised community. A couple of people are walking around with bottles of pop and snacks, obviously looted, in rucksacks and handing them out ( ... )
