Today's Question: Why were the Sentinels created?

Bolivar Trask, a prominent anthropologist (with a minor in robotic engineering), was alarmed to find his children exhibiting strange abilities. He researched the then-new phenomenon of superhuman mutants, and came to the conclusion that if mutants were allowed to spread unchecked, war between them and baseline humans was inevitable. Worse, it was a war the mutants would win.

In response, Dr. Trask created the Sentinels to capture or destroy mutants before they grew to be a real threat.

Two quick points;
