It started out innocently enough. New guy in a new city in a new apartment. It seemed only logical that Trey should offer to walk his neighbor's small dog. It never hurts to make new friends. The fact that his neighbor was an attractive and, as far as he knew, single young woman had nothing to do with the offer of course! ...And that's probably a good thing. Because here he is, two weeks later, with her miniature collie as his only company. Wait, not his only company! Because the neighbor lady was kind enough to let all her friends know what a great dogsitter he was too! So today it's not a single pooch that's leading him through the park, it's -four-. "Come on guys!" Trey half protests, half pleads with the dogs as he tries to negotiate them towards a nearby bench. "You've all got four legs, I've only got two!" And the two of them are tired.
It seems as thought today is just one of those days when everone is walking their dog in the park. Though in Nevaeh's case it's only the one, and it's hers. Not that the young husky isn't a handful all by himself. Especially when he notices a rather large group of dogs up ahead. With a delighted yelp, the large dog begins to tug frantically at the leash, bouncing up and down to try and spur Nevaeh to move faster. As he threatens to dash forward, Nev has no choice but to release the leash or be dragged face down into the snow. "Roger!!" The girl laughs as she hurries off after him, tromping through the snow in a pair of hot pink rainboots that match the current streaks in her hair. "Heel!" Yeah, that's not going to work.
Trey happens to glance up at the approaching husky and blinks. He's in no way psychic...but he still thinks he can guess what's about to happen next. Huskies by nature are energetic and strong dogs, the reason they're used in teams to pull sleds. He looks up next to who's on the other end of the husky's leash before inwardly cringing. He really hopes the dog doesn't drag her down in his excitement. Trey's relief when she lets go is short-lived. "Hey, heel, sit, whoa!" He calls out random commands, the last one more appropriate for a horse actually. The four dogs in his charge, though all smaller than the husky, work as a team to go forward and inspect this new potential playmate. Unfortunately Trey can't release all the leashes fast enough. Timber! Down he goes, but it doesn't appear that he hits the ground hard enough to really hurt himself.
"Oh Roger.." Nev manages under her breath as she watches the four dogs hurrying to meet him and dragging that poor man into the ground as a result. "Roger! Heel!" It's far too late as the dogs start yapping and sniffing at each other with a complete disregard for the man now fallen in the snow. "I am /so/ sorry." She offers with a wince as she hurries closer, reaching a hand down in an offer to help him up, that southern twang earnest in it's appology. "He's a bit of a handful."
Trey sits up before taking a glance around himself. Well, at least he fell down in some clean snow! Always look for the bright side, eheh. He smiles at looks up at the sound of her voice, accepting the hand and getting to his feet again. "No problem." He brushes off the apology the way he brushes the snow off his clothes. He looks up to make sure all the dogs are getting along and not wandering off before looking to her. "He's a beautiful dog. Pure breed?"
Nevaeh makes sure the guy gets back onto his feet before she glances back to Roger, who's currently sniffing at the smallest of the dogs, his tail waggling non stop. Atleast he's the harmless type. Too sweet and far too stupid to do any damage. "Hm? Oh yes." She grins and looks back at Trey's compliment. "Pure breed. He was a lucky find! I'm Nevaeh by the way."
Too sweet and far too stupid -- Trey could probably relate! But the grin on his lips is genuine as he nods to her introduction. "I'm Trey. Nice to meet you...Nevaeh?" He repeats it carefully to make sure he got the name right. It's not one he thinks he's ever heard before. "It's a tough call sometimes." He sighs and looks back at the dogs before explaining what it is he's talking about. "The shelters are full of mutts that need homes, but when you see a dog that beautiful sometimes you just can't resist." He can certainly see the appeal of the husky. But isn't he just a little bit too interested in the dog? Then again, for someone who was being led around by four of them, maybe not. "I'm a vet." He adds, as if to justify his rambling. "I love these guys." Meaning the dogs, naturally.
Nevaeh laughs as he questions his pronunciation of her name. "You got it right. Just think Heaven spelled backwards and you'll get it. My mother just couldn't help herself." She offers a sheepish shrug before clasping her hands in front of her. "Well it was more his personality that got me than the breed. When I showed up he was yipping and bouncing in the cage. When he knew he had my attention, he started chasing his tail. I knew right then he was perfect." She glances to the dog once more and grins. "Oh! A vet? How fufilling. I thought about that when I was a kid, but figured that I wouldn't be able to take it when the animals died."
"Heaven spelled backwards? Interesting." Trey lifts both his eyebrows thoughtfully before smiling. "My mom should've thought of that...she could've named my oldest brother Lleh." He'll leave her to spell that one backwards herself! No, it wasn't a very good joke, just something to make conversation with. Trey nods when she talks about how the husky won her over. He can picture it easily enough. An animal's personality often draws a person in. He's seen a lot of people go into a shelter or pet shop 'just to look', only to leave with a new addition to the family. "It is hard." Trey admits to the sting of an animal's death. "I think it's harder on the people than the actual animal. But then you'd be amazed at what you -can- do. The lives you can save...veterinary medicine has come such a long way." Trey nudges her gently to give a reassuring smile. "It's not too late." She hardly looks like an old woman! She could still become one if she wanted.
It takes a few seconds for Nevaeh to figure out what that spells, and when she finally figures it out she humors him with a snicker of appretiation. "He's that bad huh?" She laughs, her eyes shifting to a pale blue behind her sunglasses. "Nah, I don't think it's somethin' I could really handle. And besides, I'll have my hands full in a couple months anyway. I won't have time for any more classes." She smiles as a few more strands of pink seem to spring to life in her hair and a hand rests on her belly. "I'll leave it to the experts!"
"Well he's only slightly worse than the middle brother." Trey admits with a dramatic sigh. "I'm the youngest of three boys. I hope you can't imagine it." He grins to let her know it really wasn't as bad as he lets on. His eyes lower briefly to her stomach before lifting politely again. "Do you know what you're having?" As in, boy or girl. "I hope I didn't scare you with my family horror story." His laughter pauses when he looks to Nevaeh's hair, but then he seems to dismiss something in his own mind. Trey crouches down and picks up a stick, tossing it for the benefit of one of the dogs to chase.
Nevaeh grins. "I have three bothers and a sister. Trust me darlin', I know your pain." Laughter lifts for a second as she remembers the last month she spent at home. You can't get much more crazy than her family. "It would take a lot more than that to scare me." She glances down to where her hand rests and shakes her head. "Nope. I think we're going to wait to find out until the delivery. Though I'm secretly hoping for anoth.." pause. She shakes her head to erase old memories as the pink quickly fades from her hair altogether, leaving it a simple brown. "Secretly hoping for a girl." She smiles, distracted from her thoughts by the dogs chasing after the stick.
Trey hisses softly when she mentions the number of siblings in her family. "You've got me beat alright. I wouldn't mind having a sister though." It was just the boys and their dad for him. Trey looks over to her as she talks, an eyebrow quirking curiously when Nevaeh trails off. "So it's not your first?" He assumes from her wording before smiling. The hint flies completely over his head, for better or worse. "Yeah. Hey, maybe you'll hit it lucky and get one of each." He teases and winks at her before crouching down and encouraging one of the dogs to bring the stick over to him again. "Ten fingers and ten toes. That's all that matters, right?" He nods while rubbing the dog's head. "Unless you're a dog. Then a tail and floppy ears is a nice addition too."
"Sister's are all right, so long as they don't borrow all of your clothes." Nevaeh offers with a grin. The grin that quickly slides off of her face at his question, though her voice manages to keep the same tone. "It'll be the first that I carry to term." She states as nicely as she can before quickly diverting that topic. "One of each? I think one's enough for me. I can just picture Mark's head popping if it turned out to be twins." She giggles at the mental image that provides before her eyes widen slightly. Ten fingers and ten toes, and let's pray it doesn't come out with a tail or floppy ears. "Well, these days I suppose a child could be born with those things to."
"A sister of mine wouldn't have to worry about having her closet raided." He chuckles softly. That chuckle trails off when she mentions it'll be the first child she carries to term. Trey falls quiet at that, looking down for a moment longer. "I'm sorry." He offers in sympathy. He didn't mean to cause her any pain because of what he said. When she changes the subject quickly, Trey catches on this time and follows her lead. "If you could handle the labor, he'd probably be just fine. Eventually." Trey adds with a laugh and nod of his head. It would be quite a shock for any father! But one of the happy kinds. What she mentions after that...well, he's not sure how happy that kind of shock would be to a lot of parents. "That's true." Trey agrees. "But...I'm sure you'd love it even if it did. Right?" He tilts his head to look up at her, watching her expression if she chooses to answer.
"It's all right. You didn't know." And she's had time to heal from the memory. But atleast he's quick enough to follow along the topic change, forcing another smile from the girl. "I'm sure he'd survive. And after the shock faded I bet he'd be delighted." The mention of loving the child despite a tail earns a brighter smile. "Sugar, they could be born pink with blue polka dots and I'd love 'em just the same." She shuffles and quickly shifts her hands behind her back as the gloves respond to her words and turn pink, with bright blue polka dots. She grins and tilts her chin towards the dogs. "I think our dogs are becoming fast friends."
"The world needs a lot more mothers like you." Trey gives her an appreciative grin for her attitude. "Yeah." He agrees while looking back in their direction. "It's so easy for them, I'm jealous. Last time I went up and sniffed someone's rear, the results weren't nearly as good!" He's kidding! Really. Trey stands up straight again, bending forward just enough to pat his knees and get a couple of the dogs to return to them. "Roger, was it?" He nods towards the husky while trying to recall his name. "If he doesn't have a regular vet, bring him in to see me. I give out free dog treats!" He calls out in the dog's direction as if he could understand the human and be tempted by the offer.
"True as that might be, I'm afraid it's merely a pipe dream. Some day though, people will learn tolerance and every one can live together all happy and stuff." Suuuuure. But hey, Nevaeh can dream right? "Quite frankly I wouldn't /want/ to go around sniffing anyone in New York's backside. I can't imagine the terrible things I'd smell. Do you have a card for your vet practice? I'll talk to Mark about it, see what he says." At the word treat, Roger's ears do certainly start to perk up.
"Ah...somewhere." Trey pats himself down, finally reaching into a pocket inside his jacket. "Here you go." He smiles and hands a small card over that reads Trey A. Wyatt, D.V.M along with an address. "I'd better get these guys back to their 'moms' too." Trey smiles and gestures to the small pack of dogs he'd brought to the park. He gathers their leashes one at a time, giving them a moment to say goodbye to the husky. "It was nice talking to you Nevaeh. Good luck with everything." He nods and glances to her stomach. He does wish the best for her this time.
Nevaeh accepts the card, pleased to see the glove has returned to it's normal coloring by that time. "Thanks a lot. I'll talk to Mark tonight." She promises and gestures for Roger to come over to her, which he does eagerly after saying goodbye to his new friends. "It was nice talking to you to! Maybe we'll run into each other again soon. Bye!" She grabs ahold of Roger's leash and nudges him back in the direction of home.
