The thought sparked when Meghan and I were talking about a song that plays on the Country stations here in Seattle lately. How do artists, songs, etc get grouped into genres now?

What criteria does a song have to meet to fall into a certain genre? Does it boil down to what studio recorded the song? Like the old West Side/East Side rap rivalry? Will a song that most would call Rock be classified Country because it was recorded in Nashville? Or is it the general message of the artist? Does singing about your pick-up truck and fishing make your music Country while getting shot at, drugs and hoes makes you hip-hop/rap? (Forgive the dense and gross stereotypes involved in that statement, they just help to illustrate the idea). Or is it a combination of those or something else aside?

The song that sparked the though is "That Kind of Day" by Sarah Buxton which in my opinion sounds like teeny-bopper vomit. Then I got to thinking of songs like "Songs About Me" by Trace Adkins and Hillbilly Deluxe by Brooks & Dunn which I think both have the sound of Rock with the lyrics that I would call Country.

Just more useless prattle from the innards of my mind.
