Thank you to those who commented on my last entry. It was great to get perspective from both people who know my family and people who just know me. It was also good to hear that I'm not being ridiculous by worrying and being upset about it, because that was a concern of mine ( Read more... )

If 13 isn't old for a cat, then what is? Seriously, lol. Our dog was 15 when she died and we thought that was pretty old. I'm glad she's doing well though :)

Cats can easily live into their mid-to-late teens if they're well cared for. Some people in the cat communities I'm in have/had cats in their very early twenties. That's more the exception than the rule, but it does happen.

With dogs it really depends on the breed. 15 would be really old for a Saint Bernard or a Great Dane, or most large breeds, but it isn't too terribly old for some smaller breeds. My old lhasa, Freeway, was just shy of 13 when he died and that wasn't too old. [We thought it was at the time, though.] Grandma and Pop's chihuahua, Chico, lived to be 13. Freeway and Chico both grew up eating crappy food and only saw the vet if something was very, very wrong. Better diets and more frequent vet visits, I'm certain, would have given them longer lives.

Our dog was part chow and part cocker spaniel, but she was medium size (definitely bigger than a cocker, but not as big as a chow). She had a decent diet, but never went to the vet unless something was wrong (hey, she got carsick, and who wants to clean up dog puke!).

I would think 15 was pretty old for your dog. I cannot imagine a carsick dog, holy crap. I clean up cat puke on a semi-regular basis because Allan's cat, Cassie, is a scarf-and-barfer if you give too much food, but I hate hate hate dog puke.

What was your dog's name? She sounds like she was pretty!

I am so, so happy for you! I know how much a cat can mean to a person, and I'm so glad that she's sticking in there with you. That's awesome :D
