Carolyn had been in her library when the dinner bell rang four clear tones ascending in thirds, indicating that the family meal would be held in the china room. Carolyn found it quite odd for the china room was reserved for large events and Sundays. Either way she put away her dictionary of water beasts and made her way down to dinner. Upon approaching the china room Carolyn noticed something rather peculiar: there were only four chairs at the table -Mark’s was removed- and Evan had taken the seat on the right side of their father.
"Carolyn we would like to get started. Please take your seat." William spoke to her in an annoyed sounding tone, obviously noticing his daughters’ observation and not wanting to hear about it.
"Yes, daddy," Carolyn took her usual spot and placed her napkin on her lap. A sudden cold feeling came over her as she noticed everything was in fours and not fives. Even if someone was away from dinner their place was always set, it was almost as if Mark had never existed. What a horrible thought.
"Is there something the matter Care dear?" came Andreas soft, motherly voice, "you’ve barely touched your food."
"Oh no, nothing is the matter mommy. I was just thinking that is all."
"Well either tell us what you are thinking about or stop it, you are upsetting your mother." Her fathers’ words were harsh and were made worse by his attention not leaving his steak.
Carolyn took a deep breath before answering, she never had a problem talking about what was on her mind before, so why was now different? "I was just wonder about Mar-"
"There is nothing to wonder about."
"But daddy, he’s-"
"Carolyn, I said that there was nothing to worry about, now eat or excuse yourself."
"But I don’t understand."
'He has chosen that filthy mudblood over this family. Is that what you want to hear Carolyn? There is nothing else to understand."
"Daddy, please don’t say that."
"Don’t say what; that your brother has disgraced this family with bringing that brainwashing, flaming homosexual, scum under my roof and having relations right under my nose? Is that what you don’t want me to say?"
"No! Daddy, please…" tears started to streak down her cheeks, she wanted to run and hide from her once devoted and understanding father.
"How do you expect me to explain to people that my eldest son is gay? And further more that his choice has lead him to a muggle born? He will have no children to pass on the family name. He will have no claim to this manor, to the fortune. What would my father say; I have no heir!"
"there's EvanDaddy he’s still-"
"Carolyn Elizabeth I will not have you going against my authority. I already have one estranged child don’t think I won’t have another."
Carolyn stared in fear up at her father, had he actually just said that to her? He would just disown her so easily? "Daddy you can’t mean-"
"Can’t I? Go to your room and pack your things. You will be leaving for school in the morning." His beat red face bore down at her pale features, his eyes shooting theoretical icicles at her as his nostrils flared in rage. "Now!" he screamed when she didn’t move.
Carolyn scrambled out of her chair, running out of the room and back up to her own, throwing herself onto her bed and crying hard onto her pillow. What had gotten into her family? It seemed to be falling apart at the seams. She was supposed to be the glue and she was failing at keeping her family stuck in one piece. Carolyn grabbed blindly at the nightstand beside her bed and took the package of chocolate from Remus into her hand. Taking a large pitiful bite she could feel the enchanting calm sensation come over her and lull her into peace. In the morning everything would be better, she would make it better. She had to.
