Wait, are you SURE you don't have it? Go to Windows/temp and see if it's there, also, you can try to open your word processor again and check the drop-down box under File. Sometimes it'll save it there.
Also, recent documents may have it? ARGH. I've had that happen before and I'm so sorry if it's truly gone. *plays taps* Keep your most recent count.
The reinstall wiped everything...including the word processor (and all my other software--I'm in the middle of a download-fest with my limited bandwidth--weee!). I had to create a new login for me. It was like installing Windows from scratch, after getting the computer home from the store :(
Wow, that sucks. Truly. I say keep your word count. You earned it. They don't actually read what you have when you send it in, I hear--they just check to make sure it's real text and then run a word count on it. So you can always cut-and-paste something old up to the same number, just to fill in. It's not like you didn't actually write the damn thing.
I say use the current word count, and when it comes to the "text proof" just use one of those "lorem ipsum" text generator thingys to generate the missing word count. I know that they even suggest people do that if someone's writing the thing longhand and doesn't want to type it all in just for the word count.

I say keep your word count. You earned it. They don't actually read what you have when you send it in, I hear--they just check to make sure it's real text and then run a word count on it. So you can always cut-and-paste something old up to the same number, just to fill in. It's not like you didn't actually write the damn thing.
