To me it seems like you've been better-served by laptops than desktop computers. I know what you mean about wanting a new one though - my lappy's older than yours, and although it's still going strong, it has trouble with applications like Photoshop or WoW.
Games and apps are forever-evolving so chances are you'll want a new computer again in a few years' time. So plan for the next 2-3 years.
If you're planning to go travelling, you might want to hang on to your money. If you're not, and not planning to spend your money on other big things, then go for it.
Thinking from the economic perspective, it never makes sense to buy top of the range with computers, seeing as your going to be replacing it in 3 years anyway, you may as well go for something that will just last that, because it will be significantly cheaper than the latest and greatest, for example, last I checked pricepoint on hard drives was 640 gigs, which you could pick up for around $90 when 1TB was still over $200. I just bought a new computer, and what I did was spec it for what I wanted to do imediately, then any time that spec was below pricepoint I upgraded to pricepoint. I expect this computer to comfortably last me 3 to 4 years before it starts not being able to meet my requirements in terms of capability.
Okay... I prefer to buy higher end computers and buy them less frequently... but one thing that I will say is that buying apple upgrades is a ripoff
