Liberty lay in silence, in the dark, on her bed. She was thinking about how everything was going wrong in her life, her brother being one thing. She thought about the other day when Darcy was over and Danny had run away. She swore on her life that she had never been that scared before. I guess we all need to get away once in a while, she thought to herself. Why is everything going wrong now? she wondered my family is on the verge of a break down and there is nothing i can do she thought. She felt some cold tears run down her cheek as she thought these things.
Less than 10 minutes later, she heard yelling from downstairs, so she went to investigate. She found Danny sitting at the top of the stairs crying and she joined him. "Who is he yelling at?" she asked. Danny didn't respond. Liberty then heard the sound of a hand hitting a face and someone falling to the floor. Then she realized who it was. That's my mother she thought to herself. Why is my father hitting her? she wondered. She snuck down the stairs to see what was going on. Apparently her father got mad at her mother for something completely stupid that he just blew up in her face and started to beat her. Liberty took a deep breath to try to keep her from crying, but it didn't help. She had burst into tears. Her father spun around and started to yell at her. She tried to get away, but she couldn't. Her father had grabbed a hold of her hair and pulled her down. Then started to beat her. She was in tears by the time he was done hitting her. She was so angry with her father that she fought back once she got up. She gave him a black eye and some bruises on his arms. After that she grabbed a hold of Danny and just took off down the street. She knew what she was doing was wrong, running away from home like that with Danny, but she couldn't leave Danny there with her father being the way he is.
Where to go... she wondered. She had no idea what she was doing. Her and Danny walked to the park in silence when they realized they were far enough away from the house. They found a tree to sit under and Danny fell asleep in her lap. I cant let anything happen to him she thought. Was it a good idea to run away? she asked herself. Not too much longer, she was asleep.
In the morning she woke up with a start and Danny was still asleep. She had forgotten about her father beating her, and tried to stand up. She was in too much pain to even wake up Danny, but he had gotten up when he heard her moan with agony. As he helped her up, he noticed that their dad's car was parked by the park. Danny helped Liberty over to the car. Liberty's leg was probably broken from when her dad pulled her back, she fell on it and heard it snap. Their father looked at them with anger and told them to get into the car. Danny just stood there. Liberty said to him, "Go find other children to beat. We dont want you near us" and Danny helped her away.
They went down to The Dot because it was the only place they could think of going. They just sat there in silence for a little while, when one of the workers came up to Liberty and told her that she had a phone call and it was her mother. "I moved out," she said slowly, "I want to come get you and Danny at The Dot so you can come live with me" she told them. They waited for their mother outside, when she had picked them up, they went back to the old house, got some of their belongings, and left. They took their last look at the house as they drove away.
Liberty wondered where in the world they were when her mother pulled into a parking lot. "I bought a condo," she stated "there are 3 rooms, one for each one of us, we'll just have to get your furniture later" she said. Liberty never had been so happy in her life. Her mother had noticed that Liberty's leg was swollen, so they had gone to the hospital to get it checked out. It was definately broken. So, the doctor put it in a cast, gave her crutches, and sent her on her way. I hate my father with everything I have she thought angerly to herself.
Later that day, they went down to get their other belongings and offically move out. It was the best and the hardest thing Danny and Liberty had to do, but they were glad they had each other to help them through. In the evening their mother had taken them out to eat, when they had gotten back to the condo, Liberty went to bed. This is exactly what I wanted she thought as she fell asleep...
