[open] [location: academy halls/helen's office] Bring on the wonder

The click of Helen's heels echoed faintly as she walked slowly through the hallway. A book was hugged to her chest with a few placemarkers sticking out. She'd been doing a great deal of research as of late, nearly all of it centering around the notion of influencing genetic coding to create or alter mutant powers. It was an old pet project of hers ( Read more... )

Charles couldn't help but overhear a bit of Helen's internal monologue as he turned down the hallway, and it brought a joyful note of pride to his heart. They were lucky to have a woman like her on their team, rather than simply the other way around. He was consistently pleased that the long years they'd known each other had led them both to this same place, working towards the same goals. He took a certain comfort in that which always surfaced again in her presence.

His chair moved rather quietly because of its design, so he felt the need to announce his presence behind her, seeing as how she was lost in thought.

"Planning for a long evening, I see."

From behind her desk, Helen's gaze shot up at the sound of another. She hadn't heard him enter, but that shouldn't have surprised her by now. Still, Helen placed a hand over her heart as she let out a breath of laughter.

"Charles! You nearly scared me to death. I thought everyone was surely off to bed by now." She placed her pen down and folded her hands in front of her. "Oh, this? Just an old project I'm picking back up on." She eyed him. "But you knew that already, didn't you?"

"After all this time, I truly doubt the element of surprise will deal the final blow to Helen Magnus," he said, her smile bringing one to the edge of his lips as well. He steered the chair at a slight angle to the front of her desk, next to the chair that was already placed there, empty and waiting for company.

Her shrewd assertion withdrew a slight chuckle from him as well. "I'm always interested in the progress of this particular old project, as you'll recall."

"Oh, quite. I only regret that I haven't been able to put as much time into it as days past. Fortunately, there's a bit of midnight oil left to burn." She paused for a moment, "Would you care to assist? I always have loved our discussions on the matter. And you do never cease to offer such... insight."

And more than that, Helen enjoyed his company. With the chaos of the school year afoot, there never seemed to be enough hours in the day to just sit and enjoy the company of an old friend.
