Teen's death devastates family
By MARTA MURVOSH
Joshua GoodrowCLEAR LAKE - Joshua Goodrow's death has left his family grieving and waiting to learn how he died.
The body of the 17-year-old Clear Lake boy, who had been missing since Thursday, was found Tuesday morning in Clear Lake.
An autopsy was performed this morning to determine the cause of death, said Chief Deputy Will Reichardt of the Skagit County Sheriff's Office. Investigators have yet to rule out any potential cause of the boy's death.
Josh Goodrow was last seen alive around 7 p.m. Thursday in the 23000 block of Old Day Creek Road in the Clear Lake area. The teen had asked to use a resident's phone, but deputies don't believe he made any calls, Reichardt said.
Earlier in the evening, Goodrow had been "hanging out" with a 19-year-old friend from Sedro-Woolley High when the car the pair had been using failed to start, Reichardt said. Rather than wait in downtown Clear Lake for the car to be repaired, Goodrow left.
Around 7:30 p.m., a neighbor on East Lake Drive saw a person on his property and heard a noise and called 911. Deputies responded but couldn't find anything when they investigated.
The next day the teen's coat was found on the shore of Clear Lake, but at that point deputies didn't know he was missing.
After Goodrow's disappearance was reported at 8:15 a.m. Sunday, investigators were able to link the complaint and the coat together, Reichardt said.
This led them to search the lake Tuesday morning, first the shoreline and then using divers who operated an underwater camera.
Skagit County Search and Rescue divers found Goodrow's body late Tuesday morning about 15 yards offshore in about 12 feet of water, Reichardt said.
Many rumors have circulated in the community about the boy's death.
"The sheriff's office would like people to be aware that there are a lot of rumors out there and people should just take it with a grain of salt because they likely have very little basis in fact," Reichardt said.

Skagit County Search and Rescue divers and sheriff's deputies search Clear Lake Tuesday morning for the body of Joshua Goodrow. Goodrow, 17, of Clear Lake had been missing since Thursday evening when he was last seen asking to use the phone of a resident on Old Day Creek Road, which is near the lake. The cause of Goodrow's death had not been determined this morning.Joshua Goodrow's deadpan sense of humor brightened his friends and relatives, family members said. He loved fishing the Skagit River with the men in his family. Like many teens he enjoyed skate boarding and snowboarding.
"I don't know too many 17-year-old boys who would call up and say, ‘Hey I'm going to hang out with you guys,' " said Becky Goodrow, the teen's stepgrandmother. "He would do that with us and his other grandparents."
He was a senior at Sedro-Woolley High. A school assembly and Tuesday's basketball game between Sedro-Woolley High and Burlington-Edison High schools was postponed because of Goodrow's death.
Sedro-Woolley High had extra counselors at school today to talk with teenagers who were impacted by Goodrow's death.
Gifted at computers and art, he hoped to work for a couple of years after he graduated this year to save money toward attending the Seattle Art Institute, Becky Goodrow said. He hoped to pursue a career that used both computers and art.
"If I had a computer problem I'd have him come over and fix that," his step grandmother said.
He is survived by his father and stepmother, Chet and Nancy Goodrow; his stepfather and mother, Lisa and Tony Anderson; two siblings; several grandparents; and a large extended family.
"The whole family is so grateful to search and rescue and the detectives," Becky Goodrow said. "They have been really wonderful."
