I think part of the problem, as fucked up as it may sound, is the success of the Obama field program. They had such huge momentum and the number of people enthusiastically engaged made it seem more like a movement than a political campaign. I think this may have taken away from some of the efforts down ticket campaigns like HRC could otherwise have relied upon.
Point is they were up against the last dying thralls of the - very well funded - bigoted wing of conservatism. It was an uphill battle in any case, let alone when people were so motivated and inspired by the top of the ballot.
(PS: I'm in no way laying any of the blame on Obama - he did all he could I think.)
