If I were you, I'd head to Venice Beach, where you can wander the tacky souvenir stores, see the infamous Muscle Beach Gym, and rent a bike to ride along the path, heading north to Santa Monica. It doesn't take long to ride up and back (from memory, I think less than 2 hours to ride as far as Will Rogers Beach and back - taking my time to enjoy the scenery) - And I just googled it - it's a half hour ride in one direction. There are food places along the way, all with outdoor seating so you can stop and enjoy a snack and stare out at the beautiful pacific. Plus, there's the Santa Monica pier that you can wander along and recognise from countless tv shows and movies!
(This is nicolemack btw - just in case you didn't recognise the new name)
Thank you for the recommendations, Liz. Unless something drastically changes my mind in the next day, I think I'm going to do exactly what you have recommended in Santa Monica. You have NO IDEA how much I wish this was a fun trip and not a work trip. SO MUCH I WANT TO SEE (including you)!!! (Plus, I kinda wish Jason was coming along. It is a dream of his to move to CA, and I think it could easily become mine too.)
I totally understand your skepticism on the resort. How much does it suck that when I come to California, my client is in the City of Industry? I'm told it's as beautiful as it sounds. ;) But the Omaha-counterparts at the client assure me it's where they stay and is super nice, has a bunch of restaurants, an 18-hole golf course, and a spa, and sits up on a hill that has a view of the whole valley. Plus, it's five minutes away from the client. I am booking myself a spa appointment for Tuesday night. :)
So tell me about this ordering off the menu at In-N-Out...
I don't know much about City of Industry, but I did go to a drive in movie there and the slowest drive thru with a ton of issues there!! lol.
I agree with everyone's Santa Monica/Venice Beach suggestion! As a Santa Monica native, I can tell you tons of things to do here if you need suggestions. The pier is definitely a good one. It literally DOES show up in every movie/TV show ever. I always get so mad because I live so close to it and yet have never seen any of my fave shows filming there (and yet, it shows up in episodes!!). In Santa Monica you could also check out the Third Street Promenade (the mall at the end of it sucks though). I'd also suggest In N Out. If you venture to the Culver City area there's Tito's Tacos and Johnnie's Pastrami.
Hope you enjoy your trip, even if it is for business!
