i used the Knob 9 that gab gave me for the first one, which has a great taste that juts get better as the mint soaks amid the sugars.
this 2nd go (it was a horse named I'll Have Another, after all), uses Bulleit which is a great basic bourbon (whereas the Knob 9 is a reserve stock that is exceptionally smooth). this 2nd julep is a bit more aggressive, but we just had fiery beef chuck burritos of the grill in honour of Cinco de Mayo, so this drink does well to quench the fire.

as for Gabster ... hmm, as easy as it is to think gin, his love of the pozole (a personal request that i make it on his next SF journey, which i shall oblige) makes me think of something more latino based, something with tequila or mezcal, maybe a pisco or a good spanish rum. clearly more experimentation is necessary.
