Was at Mark Shea's blog which pointed to Wright's LJ where you had a comment on his predictions. Fancy meeting you here bub. Yeah, I was staggered by the price as well. Ave netflix.

I went to see The Spirit solely because Josh wanted to see it, being a film noir-esque author and all. The menfolk loved it (the consensus was that it was intentionally cheesy and terribly acted, seeing as how the script was clearly full of crazy from day one), and me and my female friend weren't so thrilled. In fact, I thought it was pretty awful, with Samuel L. Jackson being the only occasional good point. But, we only paid matinee prices, so it was $8/ticket, and we had a gift card. It's usually $10/ticket any other time. Ugh.

We've been enjoying Netflix a lot, and the DVR, but we recently cut out the DVR due to money problems. Comcast has a great On Demand section, though, which combined with free HBO, Netflix, and the intarwebz has served us well.

DVRs are amazing. I need to build my MythTV box. I just can't stand giving up control to TiVo or a cable company. See my previous post...

Sammy Jack was clearly the best part of the movie. That unfortunately is not a good thing. Katie mentioned that we should have been playing the Samuel L. Jackson game while watching the movie, as it almost certainly would have helped. Unfortunately, this was not realized until -after- the movie; and we certainly weren't going to hand over another $10.50 to try it out. However, it might entice me to Netflix it.

I think the consensus is right. Intentionally cheesy.

in the interest of saving money, i've cut out having a tv, paying for cable/dvr/etc, and going to most movies (i think i went to see 4 last year - sweeney todd, iron man, dark knight, slumdog millionaire). most of the networks have their episodes for free on the web now so i've just been watching the few shows i like on my computer. i honestly have no idea how the theaters expect that people can afford to spend $11 for about 2hrs of entertainment.

It is pretty insane in terms of $/hr of entertainment. I mean compare with a book ($10-$25 new, cheaper used -- 4-8 hours of reading entertainment depending on length) or video games ($25-$60 used, depending on system, etc. generally 10 hours of entertainment each or more. 50+ for many).

But going to the movie theater is a unique cultural experience. We enjoy books and video games by and large by ourselves, TV as well. Movies are a group experience. I think that's one of the reasons there's still a draw there, even though the quality is close to manageable with a modern home theater system and the price is out of whack.

All my TV is OTA Broadcast, hence another reason to desire the MythTV DVR if I'm going that route. OTA has the benefit of being free, which is like, infinitely cheaper than cable, or even dish. It does mean I miss out on ESPN, though, and that's disappointing.
