If we lie, we lie for love.
Catherine Willows could lie; she was very good at it when she wanted to be. When she was young it gave her power over those around her, helped her stay alive in a world filled with sex and drugs. Now it gave her power over a perp in an interview, an edge over her coworkers when they became too inquisitive about her personal life, and most importantly it allowed her to trick herself into believing the bliss she was feeling could go on forever. It had been a long time since she needed to lie to herself the way she currently was. Sara Sidle had walked back into the lab with a ring on her finger and a new confidence. Everything that had previously made the younger woman unapproachable melted away when a smile graced her strong features and Catherine could not help but feel her heart swell in return.
What had once been affection between coworkers now was an obsession. Catherine was always aware of the younger woman’s whereabouts while they were both in the lab. Under the premise of being the supervisor she could always ask the lab rats when she lost track of the enigmatic woman. They had lunch together when they could and slowly lunch turned into dinner. Dinner became drinks and then Catherine lost control. She let the lie consume her, let it consume them both.
They were not cheating and they most certainly were not in love.

Grissom called about twice a week, checking in on his wife and updating her on his work. Sara loved him, but she did not burn for him the way she did her friend. Catherine Willows had calmed in her absence and become stronger in her role as a leader. Sometimes she needed a push in the right direction, but when it mattered she was always there to keep things together.
Things were not what they had been when she left. The lab was on shaky ground as everyone got used to the restructuring. Everyone had their hearts in the right place, everyone except Catherine and her. She should feel guilty but she could not bring herself to when they curled up on the couch and made fun of the unrealistic physics in action movies. She felt so complete and that was something she had never gotten to really feel before. What she had now she was not going to lose, even if that meant keeping everyone in the dark.
They were cheating. They just were going to have to keep it a secret.
