Synopsis: Yunho enters the library looking for books and leaves with something more.
Yunho grumbles incoherent curses under his breath as he treks up the stairs in dawdling heavy steps. He knows he should be used to it, heading up and down the six flights of stairs in the school library; however, most of the time, he just takes the elevator. It makes things a lot easier for him, considering the large backpack glued to his back and the thick hard-covered books he needs to borrow for research. Today, unfortunately, he finds that the elevators- both of them- have been malfunctioned and are in need of fixing for an entire week.
So the only option left is to use the staircase- something he had been dreading for the past five minutes before he ends up to where he is right now.
He pauses for a few seconds when he reaches the middle of the fifth flight of stairs and takes a slow breath. How long has it been since he done this? Probably since his first few weeks as a freshman; And now, as a third year, he concludes that he needs to go to the gym more often.
Taking another breath, he decides for a sprint. What’s another seemingly long flight of stairs?
Yunho squeezes the wooden handle bar for two seconds before he lets go and jogs up the stairs through gritted teeth. After what seems to be forever, he finally reached the top. “Oh God…” he groans softly to himself, propping his hands on his knees and trying to calm his heart down. “I need to remind myself never to carry five textbooks after classes are over.”
It took him some time but once he managed to regain his composure, Yunho heads through the double doors where the multiple shelves of books proudly stand. He’s glad that no one’s around at this time; it means he has privacy and not to mention, the lack of people- females in general- makes him less nervous.
He strides through the long columns, checking up the alphabetical listing as he passes by. Once he reaches the “P” section, he cuts around the corner-
Only to hear a sharp gasp from above and before he knows it, he’s flat on the floor, squashed by some unknown heavy object.
“Oh god, I’m so sorry! Are you okay?” A voice, soft but no doubt male, asks him in concern and the pressure on his bottom half is lifted. He breathes in relief but it is short-lived due to the fact that the pressure returns, only to be pressed against his left shoulder.
“I would be if you’d get off of me.” Yunho replies dryly after a while, annoyed by the fact that his cheek is flat against the cold floor.
The male above lets out a noise of realization and immediately apologizes once more before the weight is lifted from him. He sighs again in relief and pushes himself onto his knees.
“Are you okay now?” The other asks again, this time sounding hesitant.
About to open his mouth to respond, Yunho faces to his right and all words dies from his lips. There stands the most beautiful creature on two legs. He blinks once and takes note of the ivory white hair, large chocolate brown eyes, and pale skin that rival any female model.
After all these years, how come he never sees him before?
The person before him cocks his head to the side and raises one eyebrow in mild puzzlement. “…What’s wrong?” He inquires slowly.
At that, Yunho snaps back into reality and after being caught gaping in awe like an idiot, he clears his throat uncomfortably. “Nothing. It’s nothing.” Then, he pushes himself up to his feet. “I was just wondering…did you lose your balance or something before you landed on me?”
Eyes wide for a second, the light-haired male suddenly looks away from Yunho with red-tinted cheeks. “I um…I took more books than I could handle.” He speaks up in embarrassment. “By the time you arrived, they slipped out of my arms.”
Make sense. Yunho thinks with a slight nod as he eye the books scattered on the floor. It’s amazing none landed on him when it happened.
“Anyways…I’m Jaejoong.” The other extends a hand with a shy smile. “Kim Jaejoong.”
Yunho raises an eyebrow, finding the gesture rather cute. Then, with a smile of his own, he takes Jaejoong’s hand and says, “Jung Yunho.”
Jaejoong’s smile widens into a grin. “Glad we got that over with. So, do you need help with something?”
“Huh?” The taller male looks at him, eyebrows high. “What are you talking about?”
The smile suddenly slips off Jaejoong’s face and is soon replaced with a small frown. “Well…you being here in the library must mean you need something?”
“Oh…Oh!” Yunho feels like slapping himself. He completely forgot about that! “Y-Yeah, I have a list of books I need for two of my research papers…” Then, he realizes that the list isn’t in his grasp. A bit surprised, he checks himself for the missing paper.
“Ah…you mean this?” He quickly lifts his head up and spots the familiar folded paper in the other’s hand. “Yeah...that. Thanks.”
“No problem. By the way, I’ve seen one of the books you’re looking for.” Jaejoong replies as he gathers up the scattered books and passes one of them to Yunho. “I’m pretty sure it’s this one.”
A smile of gratitude reaches Yunho’s lips as he takes the book. “Thanks. This’ll be much easier for me then.”
--
“And here’s the last one!” Jaejoong passes a thin black book into Yunho’s arm with an air of accomplishment.
Staring down at the stack of books in his arms, Yunho gives a nod. “Thanks again, Jaejoong. You’ve been a real help.”
The shorter male tilts his head down a bit and sways his body back and forth, obviously looking embarrassed. “It’s nothing. I’m glad I could help.”
Yunho suddenly gazes at the other with a thoughtful look on his face. After a short moment, he clears his throat and asks in a seemingly casual way, “So…let me treat you sometime. As a thank you, I mean.”
Focusing over the nearest book shelf, he doesn’t take notice of Jaejoong’s stunned stare along with a growing smile on his face. “I would like that.” He replies, barely audible enough for Yunho to hear.
The taller ignores the sudden strong beating of his heart and nods. “Great. Why don’t we exchange numbers and-“
“Ah, the librarian’s calling me. Sorry, Yunho, but I have to go.” Looking apologetic, Jaejoong quickly heads out the door, leaving Yunho sputtering incoherently. However, before he’s completely gone, Jaejoong turns around and says, “By the way, we share the same classes tomorrow. Why don’t you ask me then?”
Grinning at the growing shock casting over Yunho’s face, he gives one final wave and leaves.
End.
