This was spell-binding. At first, I was really sad, picturing him pining for his lost love. Then, as you described the smell in the house, I started to get scared. Needless to say, I found this to be a phenomenal entry.

This reminds me of a story I read as a kid about a woman who stole traits from little girls' dolls to make a daughter for herself.
