How is his relationship to God?

His relationship with God, as far as I know, is not strong. He hasn't been to church in a while because he felt threatened by the amount of people wanting to "save" him from his homosexuality. People were calling his home (people he didn't even know), calling him on his cell, dropping by uninvited and unannounced, telling him they would pray for his soul. That's really when the drinking and the smoking started, to be honest. I don't know how his relationship is with God, but I do know that he despises churches.
