The world R:2 is the most popular game to date in the futuristic world. It's an online MPORPG where you design a character, put on your headset, and are within the distinct system where your voice and actions are portrayed by your PC. It is here from a suggestion of a friend, that the ordinary highschool student Ryou Misaki begins his journey and creates the name 'Haseo'. Immediately after logging in, he is taken in by two veteran players,
IYOTEN and Asta. They lead him to a easy area for a 'newbie' as they call it, and seem fairly friendly, showing him how to fight monsters, get the Beast Temple where you get your treasure, and things like that. As Haseo heads to the temple with them, he finds that he is led into a trap.
IYOTEN and Asta are PKers, 'Player Killers'. They purposely lure new players into areas and then after gaining their trust, kill their PC's. It is during this that Haseo is fooled and PKed, only as he is being killed does he take note that a
mysterious man has come to his rescue. After that incident, he discovers that the man's name is Ovan, and is told that he has a great power inside of him. With that said, he invites Haseo to join the Twilight Brigade. With some coaxing from a Harvest Cleric in the guild named Shino, Haseo eventually joins the Twilight Brigade, occasionally befriending other members.
With an eccentric leader who says their purpose is to find the 'Key of Twilight' a legendary item in the world said to grant any wish, Ovan comes and goes within the group, often leaving matters up to Shino herself. Usually spending time with Shino,
Sakisaka and his 'apprentice'
Tabby, Haseo is a relatively happy player. He even develops a slight crush on Shino, though it's undefined, he definitely grows feelings for her. During their time in The World, Shino shows Haseo one of her favorite spots,a lost ground or, a place not easily accessible to other players called by it's keywords: Delta Hidden Forbidden Holy Ground
The Hulle Granz Cathedral, she says that a Goddess once resided over The World, called 'Aura' but people eventually stopped believing. This place is key in Haseo's journey, as it marks the beginning of his long, and painful development as a person and a hero. While heading to Hulle Granz, he opens the doors to find Shino literally falling in slow motion, as soon as he opens the door. Her PC body is breaking apart into bits of data, and on the altar of the Cathedral an ugly three-shaped slash burns red on the center. Usually things like this wouldn't bother Haseo, since everyone gets PKed once in a while, but not like this, there were never monsters in the Cathedral. Thoughts aside, he moves to hold Shino, who's body is dissolving quickly. He tries to heal her with one of The World's spells, but finds nothing works. Desperate, he begs her to stay with him, and Shino, gently looks up at him, smiling, and says, "Don't cry. Boys don't cry, right? " And her body dissolves, leaving Haseo letting out an anguished scream.
As he goes to check on her player, Shino Nanao, in real life, he finds that she has mysteriously fallen into a coma, leaving herself incapable of logging out. Confused and broken over this realization, he discovers that this was done by a mysterious player named Tri-Edge, who was somewhere in The World. Ovan eventually disappears and the Twilight Brigade is disbanded, as Haseo's personality takes a turn for the worst. Pushing his friends away, he devotes himself to finding and killing TriEdge, obsessed with the pursuit of power to destroy him. If he does so, Shino could come back. Eventually a few months afterwards begins a quest to find all PKers, asking them if they've seen TriEdge, and by now, he is the strongest player in The World at the time. He destroys any PKers he stumbles across, his level so upgraded that his PC has changed, giving him a frightening appearance. Myths about him appear in the world, a mysterious Adept Rouge who killed 100 PK's at once, various rumors. He is undefeated, and his nickname is 'The Terror of Death.
With all the players terrified of him, Haseo finds it's relatively easy to figure things out, though he has trouble doing even that. He becomes a cold and bitter person, rude and vicious to anyone who gets in his way. This is a mission only for himself, and bitterness runs rampant. He often loses his temper, basically he is a huge douchebag.
