You might want to investigate a CyberHome DVD player. I bought one off Amazon for $30 or so, and if one does some searching, one can find keypress codes to make it region free. It would seem to fit your criteria of "Just Play DVDs" and would be an inexpensive thing while you wait for a new HD/BR player.
