I rented a new movie at the video store last night. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. It's a silent film, and one of the first horror movies created. I'm sure it will be...fantastic. No blood, but that's alright. I can go without gore for a night.

It's interesting to see just how much film genres have changed since then. I'm still looking for The man ( Read more... )

This was the first movie to feature the monster carrying off the beautiful girl in the nightgown that has become standard of old school movies.

Standard or cliché?

It was classic. Now it is cliché.

Chuckling over here Kaoru - in some people's mind there is too much a thing as too much gore. Of course it depends on the person.

But a silent film! I enjoy those as well - you can learn so much just from watching the expressions. Makes you really think the power of words...they say it's our greatest weapon, but is it? Just watching makes it so that you can learn so much...

I'm rambling - sorry about that. Well, enjoy your film!

Gore is subjective. You realize it isn't real, but to some extent pretend it is for the sake of a minutely sadistic enjoyment. But this is a classic of it's genre.

Yes. I enjoy watching for the actual acting. Sometimes that's much nicer than seeing some half-cocked heroine regurgitating lines on a teleprompter because she's too stupid to memorize them.

Thank you.

An excellent explanation - and classics are essential after all for pop culture and the like.

And I will admit to the slightest of annoyance with the cliched heroine, but then again it's not the actress's fault for having such inane lines...though then again, perhaps they'd be interesting if done right and by someone intelligent. Not that I'm really insulting their intelligence but...oh never mind.

(Kaoru, just between you and me I agree completely. And let's just...leave it at that.)

There's something riveting about relying on one's face instead of their words. It draws you in more, don't you think?

It's rare to find someone who finds a horror film without gore good.

Don't get me wrong; gore isn't bad sometimes. But you can have a perfect good horror movie without it.

The imagination is more powerful anyway.

It's a good film. Have you seen Nosferatu?
