this life so often seems like we are just sitting in holes, staring out at what we think might possibly be sunshine, what maybe resembles freedom. everyone in their own prison(DEFINTITELY not a scott stapp reference), too deep to peer over the top, and see into our neighbors abode. either because of a natural desire for self preservation or because of our fallen nature and selfishness, we could care less about the surrounding people, about their struggles and trials. our only goal is to free ourselves from the bondage we are presently in. but everytime we get a foothold, the earth gives way and we repeat our downward fall to the bottom of the pit.
I relate this directly to the struggle of the Christian life. Anytime we think we are on the right track with God, that we are close to climbing out of the hole,we slip and get a mouthfull of fertilizer and wind up facedown in the dirt. i think the only way to possibly ever overcome this mentality is to realize that the hole IS life, and the sunshine above the hole will only come within reach is when we are in the presence of the Lord, after we leave this physical life and all its problems. if we live under the assumption that we are stuck in the hole simply because we arent climbing hard enough, we will develop a works-based mentality and begin to reject God and the necessity for His power and grace in our lives. if we recognize that this hole is as good as it gets for now, then we can change our attitudes and begin to change our goals from getting out of the hole, to focusing on what we can do while were here. Instead of trying to climb out, dig a tunnel to our neighbors hole. Instead of stuggling to climb out of your situation, let God make you content in your current settings and give you your purpose and desires and give you the strength to accomplish them.
everyone has said at least once in their life "Life is hard." But dont ask God to take you out of tough situations, ask for the strength to endure them.
