The Mechanic - Calendar Notes

Aug 28, 2012 18:15

Read chapter one of The Mechanic, my new story,  here.

So, here are my notes for Maunder, the planet on which The Academy is set in my story The Mechanic. This will explain "25h," among other things. Read at your own discretion.

MAUNDER'S CALENDAR AND SOLAR LOCATIONS
........................................
THE THREE SUNS
First Sun: Xictorv
Rises: 30h
Sets: 18h
Note: Xictorv is the brightest sun of Maunder, and remains in the sky the longest. Unlike Earth's sun it burns blue. Its name comes from the code-name of one of my old OCs.
Second Sun: Hinoue
Rises: 10h
Sets: 22h
Note: Hinoue is the hottest sun of Maunder, and is half a kilometer smaller than Xictorv, making it the smallest, as well. It rises at a strange angle, and intersects with Xictorv's path in the sky at 13h. Because of this the surface temperature of the planet tends to drop about five degrees while Xictorv is hidden. Unlike Earth's sun it burns blue. It is named after an old OC of mine.
Third Sun: Kasheek
Rises: 16h
Sets: 26h
Note: Kasheek is the largest sun of Maunder, being exactly twice the size of Xictorv. It is practically an exact replica of Earth's sun, down to how hot it burns in what places and the gaseous makeup, except it is 1/10,000th the size. (That should give you a general idea of how large Xictorv and Hinoue are.) Kasheek is also furthest away from Maunder, making it appear smaller than Hinoue. Its name comes from Chewy's home planet in Star Wars.

THE LENGTH OF A YEAR
365 (days a year) * 24 (hours in a day) = 8760 (hours in a year)
The number of hours in a year for Earth and Maunder are the same, but Maunder has 30 hours in a day.
8760 (hours in a year) / 30 (hours in a day) = 292 (days in a Maunder year)
292 (days in a Maunder year / 4 (total Maunder "months") = 73 (days in a Maunder Month)
In this universe Leap Year doesn't exist. Why? Because it seemed too far-fetched for students to get used to 36 hour days. 30 hours is pushing it enough.
........................................
SCHOOL WEEKS, SCHEDULES, MONTHS, AND THE LIKE
There are nine eight-day weeks with a single day left over in a Maunder "month." Now, that may seem long, but they're not exactly "months" in the first place. They're more like distances of time between each Solstace. In essence, the four seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn. (A semester lasts for two seasons.) Moving right along, Days 1 thought 7 are regular school days. 1, 3, and 5 are for required classes, while 2, 4, and 6 are for recommended courses. Day 7 is reserved for Optional courses, such as Art in History or Mechanics. Day 8 is reserved for catching up on Homework and rest. (Unless, of course, you are assigned to a Lab or a specific Remedial course that requires regular intervals of input time, such as Remedial Swordplay.)
Specific weeks in the season also call for specific schedules, as they will not always be regular school weeks. For example, chapter one opens on a test week. Here is a chart of the weeks.
Week# Type Definition/Events
1 Normal A regular schedule is followed.
2 Normal A regular schedule is followed.
3 Normal A regular schedule is followed.
4 Testing Class-based testing.
5 Testing Students' darkness level will be monitored.*
6 Normal A regular schedule is followed.
7 Normal A regular schedule is followed.
8 Testing Class-Based Testing.
9 Testing Students' darkness level will be monitored.*
X Free-Day Third-year students and above are allowed off-campus.
*Darkness monitoring is where the students partake in a physical test, shortly followed by a mental test, and then a series of what-if questions. Shortly after they will be placed in a machine and the darkness in their heart will be measured, along with their control over that darkness. Students who fail a single test will be placed in a remedial light class. Those who fail twice are held back a year and put on probation. A third failure will result in expulsion.

READING THE DATE
This isn't in the story, but here's how you read/write the date on Maunder.
Season # " Week # " Day # " Year Since Planet Colonization
The Season is a number. Winter is 1, Spring is 2, Summer is 3, and Autumn is 4. Happily enough, their year starts exactly when ours does.
NOTE: On the extra day of the Season on the tenth week Week # " Day # is replaced with an X.
NOTE: Maunder's years are easy to understand- just add 1989 to them and you'll get our year.
NOTE: The Day # is often slashed with the next because a Maunder day is longer than an Earth day.
Example With Earth Date Conversion:
January 1st, 2010 would be: 1 " 1 " 1/2 " 21
May 3rd, 1997 would be: 2 " 3 " 2/3 " 8
And now decoding.
1 " X " 2 - The last 6 hours of March 30th and the entirety of the 31st in the year 1991.
3 " 6 " 4 " 5 - This would take place on the 3rd of August and the first 6 hours of the 4th in the year 1994.
DECODE THE DATE!
Decode the date below into our years. I'll tell you one significance, you tell me another. (Remember- the hours count!)
3 " 2 " 8/9 " 13
Significance: The date of chapter one, scene one.
Hint #1:
((w * 8 + d) * eh) / 30 = md
Hint #2:
md - 8 * ? = d
........................................
DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME
Maunder does not have Daylight Savings time because the three suns remain simultaneously set for a total of four hours.
........................................
AM AND PM
Instead of AM and PM Maunder only has h. h (specifically not a capital) means, obviously, "hours."
........................................
NO CLASSES ALLOWED AT THIS TIME
Classes are not allowed to be held between 16h and 18h because the suns hit the academy a certain way. "Certain Way" actually means "all at once." The temperature inside the Academy can leap upwards up to 30*F / 16.7*C. Because of this classes year round are not to be held during this time as the inside temperature, which is to remain at 65*F / 18.3*C at all times, has a tendency to jump to 90*F / 32.2*C. As you probably know, an instantaneous jump in temperature this large is enough to make a person slightly ill. And as the school would be left frigid once the second sun, Hinoue, dropped below the horizon the thermostat is not adjusted lower to combat this. Not to mention it would demand a lot of energy that the school needs to run the Sim (Battle Simulation) rooms.

Love,
Besieged Infection
