For what it's worth I met my current SO on a (free) online dating site after a recommendation from a friend and 3-4 months of being registered; we're celebrating our first anniversary next weekend.
Until I signed up on there I was totally against the concept of dating sites because it seemed desperate... but then I realized fuck it, it's the 21st century and the idea that every couple out there meets in a bar or gets introduced by a coworker/college roommate (which, incidentally, is exactly what happens 90% of the time in Japan) is ridiculous at best. Especially for nerds like us!
So if you meet someone and you're into each other and it turns into a healthy & happy relationship... who cares how you met?

Are you still in Japan? Is the site you used Japan-specific?
