I don't get it

my older brother stole my laptop out of my room a few times this week and damaged the keyboard on it. He lied about it straight to my face which is to be expected. What I don't get is that my mom wants to stay out of it and my dad orginally wanted to stay out of it because, somehow, Dan has the moral capacity to lie to them while looking right at
