Gabon euskaldunak - Basque Christmas

Dec 15, 2011 09:24

Christmas is not the same all over the world. Traditions change from one country to another and how Christmas is celebrated is one of them. In this post I’m going to explain some things we do in the Basque Country at Christmas. Not just Christmas day, but the whole “Christmas holiday” (school holiday period). My family, for example, celebrates:

OH MY GOD. This is INCREDIBLE! You are amazing.
First, for the beautiful post, second for the hilarious Antoine/Muniain video!!!!!!!
It's hard to say who is the better group of singers, but I'd have to vote for the Athletic Club 'choir' (choristas? is that right?)

*HUGS* And many thanks for this wonderful Christmas entry!♥

THANK YOU! *blushes*

I just thought it right to introduce you all to the Basque Christmas. There's probably more to it than I said, but it really is difficult to explain things like this.

With all the background information the Antoine/Muniain video probably makes more sense, right? And I comletely agree with your statement: Athletic Club players are better at singing (and also better football players :D), hands down! Maybe they did some auditions previously and selected the best singers? I so would have liked to see that!! xDD

Hehehe, is it just me or are certain Athletic players ALWAYS selected when it comes to singing stuff? Apparently they rock at this! (Which is more than can be said about Iker. XD Or Antoine. OR ASIER ILLARRAMENDI WHO IS JUST MOVING HIS MOUTH BUT NOT SINGING!! XD)

And I vote for a show called "Athletic Idol", complete with castings and motto shows and everything. Yep. That would totally make my life. XDDD

I loved all the information about the Basque Christmas and Olentzero. :)

Hahaha...too true about Athletic Club having better singers and football players!

I was also thinking that while watching the video...that the best singers on each team were probably selected for the 'choirs'...that makes total sense. I admit I could easily watch an entire 'making of' documentary on the whole process of choir selection. ;)

Thanks again for the most delightful post. I'm bookmarking it and saving it to 'Memories'. :)

Olentzero is depicted as a lovable character, widely attributed to being overweight, having a huge appetite and thirst
LOL, Olentzero sounds a bit like me. XDDD

I hadn't heard of the Olentzero songs yet but a part of it sounds really familiar! I think it was part of the Camarero joke that Pepe Reina told after the Euro 2008? The "una de mero, dos de febrero" part ( ... )

Btw, I just found this article about Olentzero, and even though it includes most of what you've already said, it's quite an interesting read:

Basque Santa: He brings gifts or coal - but prefers wine to milk and cookiesFrom the hurried shopping to the careful wrapping, to the tree decorating and cookie frosting, the holidays are all about good cheer and one jolly old man, Santa ( ... )
