I recently discovered a product called Salonpas. They are cheap and I found them at Walgreens but I am sure you could find them online too. They are cheap, like $6 a box and you get 40 patches.
You slap them on where it hurts. It is not just camphor and menthol like a lot of other patches. They have methyl salicylate which acts to reduce inflammation. They do not take all the pain away but they do help me. I like that they are cheap too because I slap like 4-5 of them on at a time when my knees are really bad. They are suppose to last 8 hrs but usually they fade after 2-3 and I yank them off.
It is worth a try to see if it helps. :) Another one to ask the dr about is a lidocaine patch. I heard about them but have yet to ask. They are like these but you need a Rx for them. If the dr is afraid of giving you narcotics they might be open to giving you a dermal lidocaine treatment, which will just numb the area.
