Teddy Lupin was a small boy of six. He wasn’t an ordinary boy of six though. He could change his looks with just a scrunch of his nose and his hair was currently a bright turqoise. At full moon he always got bad tempered and slightly violent - his favourite thing to do was to throw plates at the walls - and he wasn’t quite himself as usually he was a very quiet and pleasant little boy. He wasn’t a full werewolf like his dad had been.

Today, Teddy was sat at his parents side in a small ward at St. Mungos. He often came to visit with his gran. It made him feel uncomfortable at first because they were just there, not moving but looking so peaceful, looking just like they were sleeping. He didn’t understand why they wouldn’t wake up and see him, no matter how many times gran had tried to explain. In the end she had just told him that he would understand when he was older and that the important thing to remember was that they knew he was there, wherever they were they could see him and were watching.

His parents had always been like that, for as long as he could remember and if he just had one wish it would be for them to be alright again.

Soon it was time to go home and as he took his Gran’s hand he turned back in the hope that they would sit up and ask him to stay, just as always. They never did.

Teddy was now nine years old and he still visited his parents as often as he was allowed. Sometimes gran let him stay in the room alone now he was older. He had grown to accept that his parents would never wake up, he half understood now what was wrong with them. At the Battle of Hogwarts they had both been hit with a Dark curse that there was no known cure for, it cast them into a deep sleep - not killing them but not letting them stay alive exactly. Letting them hover between earth and heaven, never fully belonging in either place but letting their mind stay the same. Originally everyone had thought they had died and it was only by luck that someone realised that they weren't and took them to St Mungos. He knew that they were watching over him, just like gran had always told him.

Sometimes he got mad at them for leaving him and going off to fight when they knew that there was a change that they may be badly injured or worse killed. He had voiced that opinion to his Godfather, Harry, once and Harry had told him that neither of them had wanted to die or leave him but they were doing it because it was the right thing to do and they wanted to help make the world a safer place for him to grow up in, away from the terror of Voldemort. He’d never told anyone again because now he felt guilty about thinking things like that.

He sat and stared at his parents, just willing them to make some sign of movement. Anything would do. Out of the corner of his eye he could have sworn that he saw the corner of his mums mouth twist into a smile. He shook his head, trying to get the image out of his head. Perhaps he was too tired and just seeing things. The next thing couldn’t be explained as a trick of the light. His dads hand slowly reached out and grabbed his mums before going still again. That certainly wasn’t a trick of the light.

His gran walked into the room at that point and saw him staring. She looked and immediately put her hand to her heart - progress was being made at last and it was more than anyone had ever hoped for.

Nothing changed for a few months much to Teddy’s disappointment. He had been sure that they would wake up any day but they hadn’t. He was now nearing his tenth birthday and he wanted to share it with them. That was his one birthday wish.

Gran had left him alone again while she went to get herself a cup of coffee and to get Teddy some pumpkin juice. Without warning, suddenly his mother opened her eyes and blinked. He got up and leaned over her, whispering to her, saying that she could do it and to open her eyes again.

He had almost given in and accepted that she wasn’t going to do it again when she opened her eyes for a second time, this time they stayed open.

It was at that moment when he heard a sigh coming from his dad and noticed that he was trying to move his face, but it was like some invisible hands were preventing him from doing that.

Teddy’s heart was pounding. They were so close, so close to waking up, so close. His dads eyes twitched and Teddy found himself praying that his eyes would open, it would be that one step closer to getting his parents back and then maybe they’d continue to improve until one day they could come home and they could be a proper family.

Progress continued to be slow, however, and it wasn’t until his eleventh birthday when they were finally able to sit up and look at him. They couldn’t speak but they were able to show how they were feeling and understand what was going on around them. The Healers were cheerful and tried to reassure Teddy that one day their speech was likely to return - they’d improved this much which was a miracle in itself and that if that could happen anything could.

He had received his Hogwarts letter that morning with the post and he was proudly showing it to his parents while sat between them on the beds that had been pushed together some years ago in the hope that it may help their recovery. They smiled at him, obviously proud, and his mum wrapped her arm around him and gave him a squeeze.

The Healers had never come up with an explanation for their progress when it had been originally thought that they would stay in that state forever. The best they could was to assume that it was to do with love. The love they had for each other and the love for their son. Old magic that the Death Eaters hadn’t thought about and maybe it had been Voldemort that had invented it and as he didn’t understand love he didn’t believe there would be anyway to undo the curse. Love was powerful magic.

As he left, he looked back at his parents and smiled as they waved goodbye. Yes. Love was powerful magic and hopefully some day they’d be back to how they used to be and be able to tell him stories of what they were like when they grew up and he could fill them in on everything that had been going on in the last eleven years.
