Courage
It was a very lonely train ride home for Christmas, much like the journeys to and from Hogwarts had been before she had friends. Ginny had been picked up in Hogsmeade by one of her older brothers earlier in the day and Neville had decided to stay at Hogwarts for the holidays. Not by choice, but he had nowhere to go as his gran was on the run. Luna would have quite happily had Neville stay with her, but he had politely declined her offer. He was going to try and do some more recruiting for the DA.
She was looking forward to seeing her dad. She missed him terribly when she was at school and always went home at holidays so she could spend time with him. She was even more excited than she usually was because her dad had made progress with the Crumple-Horned Snorkack search - he had actually got a Crumple-Horned Snorkack horn and it was on display in her house. She couldn’t wait to see it, she’d been waiting so long to see proof of its existence, even though she didn’t need proof to know that it was real.
It had begun to snow and Luna sat and looked out of the window at the falling snowflakes, wishing that she could be outside and able to stick her tongue out to catch a snowflake and make a wish. Usually her wishes consisted of small things, but this time she wanted nothing more than to wish for the safety of Harry and Hermione. She knew that Ron was safe, he was currently staying with his oldest brother and his wife, but nothing had been heard from Harry and Hermione and it worried her more than she’d have thought.
The train came to a sudden stop and the lights turned off leaving the compartment dark as it was by now late in the afternoon. Luna pulled her wand out from its usual place behind her ear and waited, ears listening for the slightest noise. These days you could never be too careful, you always needed to be prepared in case of an attack. It would be awful if a Wrackspurt decided to come into the compartment now, she didn’t need her brain to become all fuzzy because then she wouldn’t be prepared.
She heard a loud voice coming from further up the train and suddenly she was afraid. Death Eaters. They had boarded the train. They must be looking for someone, otherwise they wouldn’t have bothered. Not many people were going home and You-Know-Who had given orders not to harm any of the students unnecessarily because he needed them unharmed, he needed them on his side so that they would fight for him.
Dark figures stopped outside of Luna’s compartment and she just knew that she was the one they were looking for. She could hear mumbled voices through the glass but she could only make out bits of the conversation.
“Her father…”
“Serves him right.”
“Those things he wrote.”
“Knows better than to anger the Dark Lord.”
“Thinks she’ll be good bait.”
“Yeh, that Potter.”
“Loony apparently, she won’t give us any trouble.”
Then came the laughter before they pulled open the doors and started to enter. They had come for her, and they would take her. There were just too many of them to fight off but she would fight anyway. She was a member of the DA, this is what they were trained to do. She had fought them before at the Department of Mysteries and she could do it again. Ravenclaws weren’t recognised for their courage, that was for Gryffindors, but she had courage and she’d show them.
“Expelliarmus!”
