Explosion

She’s never told anyone how she feels. Not even Neville, her husband of five years and friend for many more. At night she lays awake in bed and remembers that dreadful day, and remembers how it was all her fault.

She disobeyed her mothers orders to stay away from the kitchen, and as a result of her disobedience her mother died when her spell went wrong. She remembers the explosion, everything about it in clear detail. The colour of the light, the sound of a hundred thunderstorms and her mothers screams. She remembers the sight of her mothers body falling to the ground in a crumpled heap and she remembers running to her, only to find her lifeless eyes staring blankly up at her.

She must have broken her concentration when she opened that door. Her mother was an extraordinary witch and her spell wouldn’t have gone wrong if she had been left alone. All this destruction because she was curious about what was going on downstairs. The worst thing was, that her curiousness didn’t stop after this and she was worried that she’d cause someone else harm because of this.

When she gets the carriages up to school, the Thestrals are a constant reminder of what she had done. They can only be seen by those who have seen death and she knows that if she had never entered that room, she would not be able to see them. Thestrals are nice creatures though, and very useful. Whenever she thinks that, a wave of guilt floods over her. She shouldn’t like these creatures.

Still, one thing can make her feel better. The thought that one day she’ll see her mother again, and then she can apologise for everything, something she feels she cannot do at the moment - it has to be done in person.
