You know I would love to be a humanitarian; really I would. It actually coincides quite well with my basic nature. Except... people insist on proving to me every day just how rapidly we are declining as a species.
Chivalry? Common courtesy? Common fucking sense? How about… Moral obligation and personal responsibility? It is exceedingly rare to find any of these things. All of them have seemingly fallen by the wayside. And it is not even differentiated by class. Poor people, rich people, medium income level people - they are all classless and disrespectful. The moral ineptitude and personal greed knows no bounds.
What is it exactly that we are teaching our children? That we have them as trophy pieces? To temorarily fill some hole, when in reality our careers (which are needed in order to have that big house and fancy car) are more important to us than raising decent humans, than spending quality time with the little people that we did indeed create? We pay nannies, babysitters and day care centers to raise our children for us. Should we really trust other people to teach our children important life & morality lessons? Do you know the average day car worker only gets paid $7 an hour? Why have children if you are just going to pay someone else to raise them for you? I won’t even touch the fact that most people should not ever reproduce.
See unlike politicians, I actually DO believe that children are our most important resource. That does not mean however that they need no boundaries. We are teaching them to respect & value all the wrong things. No longer do we take pride in family and friends; or our personal accomplishments unless it is to show off & brag. What happened to the simple joys of having a face-to-face conversation? Of having a family gathering including a few generations; the young-ins listening to the old timers tell stories? Maybe those stories were part of an ideal form of education, they didn't necessarily teach you algebra but they gave you a sense of belonging to a unit, a sense of your own personal history. There really is some great wisom to be had from our elders and socializing with all age groups. We have traded in personal interaction for iPods and IM’s.
We teach that it is McDonald’s fault your fat, not yours or your parents, for allowing you to eat 5 Big Macs a day; every day. It not MY fault I spilled hot coffee in my lap - it’s the place where I GOT the coffee that is responsible. It’s not MY fault I am a criminal, my mommy beat me - it’s her fault; I know I was breaking into YOUR house while you were on vacation but I slipped and broke my leg on an oil stain in your garage then couldn’t get out of the garage for 2 days, so now YOU own ME $500,000. But you know I have a 5 year old that can’t sit still for longer than 5 minutes. I really wish he would just resemble a piece of furniture, hmmm...What can I do? I KNOW! I’ll put him on Ritalin, that will calm him down (as well as fuck up his developing body and ruin in brain chemistry for the REST of his life) so I can get some work done because you know, I left the office early to spend some time with him.
What happened to actually getting good grades in school? Aww... you didn’t do you homework and you failed for the year? That’s okay, even though you didn’t actually learn enough so that you may pass the next grade level- we’re going to pass you anyway because it’s bad for your self-image if we don’t. Everything now has a seemingly easy way out. You can sue companies and people for things that are clearly your fault and due to your own stupidity; thus bastardizing the validity of true victims. Feeling blue? Take a pill; it’s not your fault. Can’t get it up because you’re 110 and probably shouldn’t get it up? Here’s some Viagra.
I WILL continue this later...(if only) because I am quite disgusted with the human race today
