aka - HEIRS, BRO. (up to episode 8)
+ Oh lord, it's not that rare that I find myself in a fandom were i SHIP ALL TEH SHIPS!!1 except the canon ones (ew, gr-oss)
(this post is insane and i sound insane and my shipping is out of control.)
+ First of all, HELP ME I SHIP BONA WITH EVERYBODY. Krystal is just so damn charming and delightful that she manages to wrangle something a bit different out of the rest of the cast - first and foremost my main OTP of this show is Krystal/Young Do which I decided on in Episode 1 before they ever interacted and was delighted in Episode 2 when they had the exact relationship that I thought would make them work - a) He's more gentle with Bona than anyone else, because everybody in the cast (bar Rachel) are all exceedingly gentle towards her (which just fyi, has now also made me ship Tan/Bona wtf self more on that later) she's kinda like a puppy you know? The way everyone just calls her pretty all the time even though it rarely even gets her off track (OBVIOUSLY THEY JUST FEEL THE SAME AS ME AND JUST FEEL THE NEED TO COMPLIMENT HER ON HER PRINCESS-NESS). But seeing as I'm not even remotely shipping him with Eun-sang and although it would normally be PERFECT for me - Rachel/Young-do isn't really doing it for me either, the Gu Jun Pyo approach to women isn't appealing to me for this character.
I just don't know why the show feels the need to wade through the usual cliches of Passionate Girl/Cold Guy to make Young-do grow as a character and eventually learn to be less of an asshole, when I already see it in him when he's gently teasing Bona - which was far more appealing. UGH YOU GUYS I KNOW, I'VE THOUGHT ABOUT IT TOO MUCH. I can just imagine him in Chan-young's position with Bona heaping the same amounts of love and loyalty on him AND HE WOULD JUST INDULGE HER IN IT SO MUCH AND SECRETLY LOVE IT BECAUSE HE JUST WANTS TO BE LOOVVEEEDDD. FML THAT IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN BECAUSE IT WOULD BE SO. GODDAMN. CUTE.
#ahem
Anyway, this seems like an appropriate time to link YOU TO A BONA/YOUNG-DO FIC THAT ZOE FREAKING WROTE ME BECAUSE SHE IS MY SUN AND STARS AND GREATLY INDULGES ME IN RANDOM CRACK SHIPS I COME UP WITH
read it here. (no srsly this was like the highlight of my week. *raises glass* TO MUCH HEIRS FIC IN THE FUTURE rarrr rarrr amen) I prompted this just after their brief arm-grab/eye!sex moment in Episode 7 THAT LITERALLY CONTAINED MORE CHEMISTRY IN A FEW SECONDS THAN THE REST OF THE SHOW HAS PROVIDED IN EIGHT EPISODES AND I WAS LIKE 'YEP YEP THIS IS IT, IT'S HAPPENING, I AM FULLY ON BOARD MY IMAGINARY SHIP.'
+ Erm after their scene in Episode 8 I also totally ship Tan/Bona (or at least in the sense that I would love to see some flashbacks of their past relationship) which is truly incredible because I never thought I'd be able to muster up enough interest to ship him with anyone. Krystal just working her wonders, man. Actually this episode made me think about just how much I'd like to see some flashbacks, I think it could do some truly wonderful things for the characters to see their past friendship group where they're dating and the bromance is strong with Young-do/Tan and (one I might like to see most-) Rachel and Tan are friends.
+ None of this is to say that Bona/Chan-young are not ADORBS. AND PRECIOUS. SUNSHINE. OF. LIFE. Because they totes are and I die a little inside after he smiles gently after her for being ridiculous. Just kinda sucks that the only character I ship with everyone is the only person ever to be in a happy teenage relationship ;__;
+ I've decided she needs a scene with Won because if anyone can spark some life into him, it's Bona's radiance. i could ship that
+ I also liked the Rachel/Bona scene because it was one of the few times that Rachel showed exactly what she is - a bratty teenage girl, not a souless automoton. And there was much beautiful hair-tossing and bitchy comments to be had.
BASICALLY I LIVE A LEE BONA APPRECIATION LIFE OK.
Other ships:
+ Won/Rachel, I'm totes into it, their one scene together was the only scene ever that Won wasn't a massive dick in and Rachel's first scene that she seemed mildly happy in.
+ Rachel/Hyo-shin. HE MADE HER SMILE YOU GUYS. IT WAS GLORIOUS. THE CLOUDS PARTED. AND I FIND HIM ATTRACTIVE. AND HER ATTRACTIVE. THEY SHOULD KISS.
+ Hyun-joo/Hyo-shin or Hyun-joo/Manager Yoon tbh, anything that does not involve Won because he is starting to become a major creeper and it's pissing me off. I actually like Hyun-joo but I'd like to see her in a larger context than her various romantic plots. (and Hyo-shin actually but that's just because of face appreciation.)
+ Rachel/Young-do are surprisingly not doing it for me? I sort of enjoy their Cruel Intentions-esque relationship, but lbr, this is a KDrama and it's never going to get sexy enough for me to ship it and as I basically live my fandom life by the words 'I Just Want Everyone To Be Happy' I can't ship them in a KDrama-soulmate way either because I completely believe that they are far too similar to ever be happy together and would spend their days trying to make the other more miserable .
+ Tan/Eun-sang are....fine? Ok? Have their moments? Their moments are their playful ones btw - when everything is very "where did you come from?!" "a fairy tale *flutters eyelashes*" but for some reason Tan is becoming more of an asshole and ....more like Young-do, basically, with every episode. I always think I could really get behind this couple when something unexpected happens - like he just straight up asks her to like him then seems to leave her to make a choice, or when Eun-sang buys him and Young-do a sassy cup of coffee because she is so 3000% done with their shit. But then the KDrama cliche Gods have to storm in with the physical abuse and the bullying-as-love and Eun-sang suddenly unable to jUST STAND UP FOR. HER. SELF. and my poor soul simply grows weary of it all.
OH WAIT, THERE IS A PLOT, APPARENTLY.
+ Eun-sang has the best Mother, and even though she's an awful woman, I kinda love Mum's relationship with Madam Han because lol you guys their weird relationship just gets better with every episode.
+ Drama has pretty good cinematography, you go drama.
+ Could not possibly care less about the adult affairs/relationships, it's almost impossible how little I care.
+ Young-do has one of the worst KDrama parents of all time and that's saying something. He seems to hate his son and the actor is very good because he has such an unassuming look about him? It's really startling when he suddenly becomes a vicious monster.
+ Won is so deeply unsympathetic to me, I keep waiting for something to happen for him but I'm almost feeling like the Drama thinks they have such a handsome man playing him that he doesn't need any character growth, women love assholes!!1! I find his behaviour towards Tan fairly confusing tbh because jesus, what's a much simpler and effective way to not let your brother take your company? MAKE HIM ADORE YOU. WHY WOULD YOU TRY TO MAKE HIM HATE YOU? WHAT COULD POSSIBLY BE MORE UNHELPFUL THEN THAT? Men. Lawd. He doesn't even have the buckets of charisma that Young-do has to make him seem charming or yano.....interesting. Could try harder.
+ Eun-sang is....ok. I really wasn't a fan of her at first because she just seemed like Park Shin Hye playing every Park Shin Hye character ever and frankly she cried a baffling amount and I was never entirely sure over what. But, sometimes, she shows me a spark of something new..... buying those sassy cups of coffee, walking away from an argument because she doesn't have a fuck to give, telling people straight why the shit they're trying to pull on her is stupid....then I like her. Then I could love her. But frankly it's not nearly consistent enough and I remain generally uninterested in her.
+ Rachel is also fairly flat to me, I can see why people would like her because she has the potential to be very interesting, but right now she is just the most basic trope of Poor Little Rich Girl with no actual characteristics to fill in the blanks. But I have seen her moments and wish they would get a bit more frequent (and her actress has the most lovely doll-like face, it makes me hate life.)
+ Joon-young the poor baby :( this was somewhere the show surprised me - I thought for sure he was going to try and blackmail/threaten Eun-sang with the knowledge of her Mother but.....he protected her instead? And then bowed out without ever saying a word to anyone about her? TOP GUY TBH. I never hated Young-do more then when he was being wretched to him.
Okay I'm becoming self-conscious about how long this is getting, especially because I didn't even particularly enjoy the show until around Episode 5/6. SO WE'LL CUT IT OFF HERE.
PS - I'm shipping Mary/Branson in Downton Abbey more than I have ever shipped anything on that show, as I mentioned earlier - lol my life.
PPS - My babies won Video of the Year at the YouTube awards, much ridiculous and gross racism ensued but lol @ SNSD skipping off into the sunset with their award and 500,000 more views on the video with people coming to be gross and racist all over it. THE WORLD DOES NOT SEE THAT IT CANNOT ESCAPE THE HALLYU WAVE TBH, IT IS COMING FOR YOU.
PPPS - Gonna go watch those SHINee videos now Eleonore and Alex, so pls save your inevitable harrassment.
PPPPS - I read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo books and I finished and on one hand I was insanely happy because fuck that man was a genius and also devestated because THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN SEVEN MORE BOOKS AND WE COULD HAVE HAD IT ALLLLLLLLLLLL AND THE OTP AND THE TWIN SISTER AND UGHHH THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ANYONE CAN DO ABOUT IT, IT'S SO FRUSTRATING.
