Time is pointless when the past is with you presently

How does a soldier throw down his weapon, just like that, after fighting a war for their entire life? I can tell you for certain that the answer is he doesn't. My entire life had/has been, up to some blurry point in time that never really made much of an impact on me or my actions, an all out war for survival. Honest to whatever life and death
