over here in detroit, things get heated.

the olympics have made me very sad. here in hockeytown, everyone hates the candians because they beat us and detroit is big big big for hockey. it's even worse because we're so close to canada, there's tons of canadians here too. oh, and the fact that the detroit red wings are NOT mostly made up of americans... mostly canadians and russians, duh ( Read more... )

I heartily agree.

And I feel exactly the same way about national pride. I just...don't really get it. We all live on the same planet, right?

Maybe it's a side effect of a steady stream of scifi, or growing up in liberal coastal CA. Or both.

I think we're relatively mild in comparison to other countries. OMG soccer. European soccer fans are crazy ( ... )

i understand and respect what you're saying, and my entry isn't really geared toward people like you. i think that you have a very healthy attitude, it just seems that with nationalism, often come the crazies. the people who take it too far and write country songs about the USA putting a boot in someone's ass, hah. it's not so much america as these people who steer me away from being all "WOOHOO I'M AMERICAN!". it seems that being proud of your heritage can so often push weak minded people into hating others, and that is what i do not agree with.

Korean children used to draw Japan as a floating pile of poo. :D

I get what you're saying, but they honestly don't stop me from being proud. It's like how I don't stop associating myself with feminism because of the femnazis or pro-life because of the people who attack abortion clinics.

But if I don't feel that strongly about something, I prefer to stay away from it if it has ties with unfavorable people as well. It's just not worth the trouble of having that association.

lmao @ japan=poo

i guess maybe i don't feel very strongly about it. to be honest, i'm just starting to feel even an inkling of pride for america. after bush was elected for the second time, i literally cried. at that point, i felt this whole country was full of idiots who were so far removed from me, i couldn't even understand them. reelecting bush was like a personal attack on my welfare. i knew he wanted to outlaw gay marriage, but i wasn't sure he'd stop there if possible... if he stacked the supreme court... who knows. i mean, for example, some republican senator(sorry, i forget which state) just removed homosexuality from the list of hate crimes. that sucks but thank god my worst fears weren't realized, but anyways... the point is that with obama, i am actually starting to feel hopeful. bush was so against everything i stood for, i hated how he made america look and sound. it made me shamed to be from america, truly.
