Synopsis: An inner struggle rears its ugly head.
She sat on her bed, feet dangling, without touching the carpeted floor. The dark, patterned covers had been pushed away just seconds before this moment, but it seemed like hours to her. The clock continued to click and with each click, her life was getting shorter and shorter. She felt as if she was living a life that was shadowed by an inflexible loop. Getting up would mean another flawed yet predictable adventure and she wasn’t quite ready for that.
“Gina, don’t sit on the bed. It worries me when you do that. Staring into the corner isn’t the best way to convince me that you’re coping,” her older sister, Beth, chirped to her. Her eyes had worry in them and Gina didn’t like being the cause of that look.
“Don’t you worry about me, dear. I’m just thinking about what I should do today. Any suggestions?”
“Getting off the bed would be an excellent start. I know you don’t like being watched all the time so I’ll be in the kitchen. Don’t take too long in here.”
“I know, I know. Leave me be,” she nodded, quickly. Then, adding a smile, she convinced her sister of her progress.
After the older woman was gone, Gina slid to brush her toes against the carpet. It was shaggy and slightly rough, which resembled her life. Finally, she had hope in her spirit and found the courage to stand up and begin the day. The woman started by walking over to the mirror and brushed her hair, but that simple task was tainted by her impossible need to brush it one hundred and thirty nine times.
Reaching the specific and right number of brush strokes, she could place the brush back on the dresser and go into the kitchen. Beth was there, just as she promised, and Gina saw that she was making her special chocolate chip pancakes.
“Oh, sis, you didn’t have to do all this for me. You’re so silly sometimes.”
“Nonsense! I didn’t just do this just for you, you know. I do have quite the craving for these babies,” she smirked, playfully. She looked younger in those short moments of sisterly love. Free from the overwhelming worry.
The younger sister talked while the pancakes were served. “ I was thinking of going out today. By myself.”
Beth paused, stunned by the news. “Are you sure you’re ready? I don’t want you to rush yourself.” The worry had returned, creasing Beth’s forehead, and it made Gina hate herself.
“I’m ready, sis. I know I can make it. I know I can.”
“I support you. You know I do. Now let’s eat.”
They ate in a comfortable silence and finished the breakfast quickly. She thought to herself and decided to make her move right then. She stood up, slowly, shoes and keys at the ready, and made her way to the door. The disease reared its ugly head when she tried to unlock the door. She was met with a loop that she couldn’t stop by herself. Unlock. Lock. Unlock. Lock. Unlock. Lock. Unlock. Lock. Unlock. Lock.
Gina stood there, sobbing, as she continued to turn the lock back and forth. Trapped inside with a monster.
