Summary: A quiet dinner between two friends turns into something more when delicate topics are breached and the Davids discover something about one another they didn't think possible.
Disclaimer: NOT REAL. But I'm hoping the characters aren't TOTALLY unbelievable.
WARNING: FYI: I SUCK SO HARD AT WRITING FLUFF. There has to be a few references to dirtier things in a story, even one as tame as this. It's kinda rambly and lame, too. But I liked some of the dialogue.
In all his life, David Cook had been told that coming out of the closet was difficult. He hadn't done it for fear of... the results, for lack of a better term. But he was often tempted. Because he was quite gay. I say 'quite' because he'd known for so long that he was gay: the tender age of sixteen, when he'd had his first crush on another boy. In this case, it was his high school's resident bad boy, a senior, who had taken him under his wing.
Naturally, David had fallen hard for the dark haired boy with a cigarette between his lips and a leather jacket.
It wasn't long after this when he kind of guessed he was gay. He was fine with it. He made it a part of who he was without advertising it, and it was easy. But coming out? Always seemed stressful. David wasn't into stress.
"David Cook, are you listening to me?"
The singer shook his head to clear it, returning his attention to the young man seated across from himself at the table in the quiet restaurant. "Sorry, Arch." He said with a smile. The younger man had asked him to dinner after they'd both returned from long, stressful tours. It was a good chance for the pair to unwind, talk about the old times, talk about anything. And Archie was using this to his advantage, preparing to tell David something pretty important by the looks of everything.
The young man smiled. "It's fine, really... but this is kind of important." He told David, folding his hands on the table. "I wanted to tell you this because... I trust you, and because I think maybe it's time to tell someone."
David folded his hands too, grinning. "Shoot."
"I'm gay."
The elder of the two gaped like a fish for a long moment at Archie. He was... wait, that didn't work... he was... was that even allowed? "Fuck, Arch-" He began, looking for a place to start. There were so many ways he could totally ruin this conversation, ruining, forever, Archie's confidence in his choice.
"I figured you'd want to know, that's all." The younger boy cut in, gazing fixedly down at his own hands. His neck and ears were reddening swiftly, his breathing deep but a little labored. "Since, you know, we roomed together for a long time and everything."
He looked so fucking cute when he was flustered. This was the first thought that ran through David Cook's mind before he reassessed the situation.
Okay. So. David Archuleta, his young friend and one of Cook's closest in the music business, had just come out. To him, before his family, his friends, his... world. He'd chosen David Cook over all the more obvious choices. Nextly: He seemed embarrassed. David would have to set it straight in Archie's mind that being attracted to men was fine, and could be normal, he just had to deal with it right. Point three: Cook's initial response to the younger boy's announcement had been inappropriate and sounded almost rude. He would have to amend that. Fourth, and finally: Archie was gay. This opened up a world of possibilities that the older man had only taken the time to imagine before now. But he couldn't scare Archie with something like that, not right yet.
"Arch, look at me." David began after sorting through these thoughts in only a few seconds. "You have nothing to be embarrassed about, you just caught me by surprise." He said firmly. "I'm glad you trust me enough to share something like this with me."
Archie sent his friend a grin that said 'who else am I gonna tell?'
It felt weird, having a straight (no pun intended), serious conversation with the young songbird for once, but David was almost enjoying the feeling that yes, he was wiser in this situation. "I want you to know that I respect how you feel, and I don't think it'll change anything about our friendship."
Archie's grin was instantaneous and joyous, a beautiful, childish grin that made David need to smile too. "You're okay? Not weirded out or anything?"
"This is the music business, Arch. You can't surprise me anymore." David replied with a small smile in return.
The younger man shrugged, giving his signature awkward laugh. "I guess that's true." He quipped. "So... I just wanted to get that off my chest. Thanks for being so understanding."
Understanding my ass. If you'll pardon the interruption by the author, that is... David Cook was so understanding that his mind was already racing with things he'd never tried with someone like Archie... any man, really. He was gay, yeah... but he didn't do the whole gay sex thing. At the same time, however... he could see Archie's face, eyes closed, lips parted in a delicate moan, he could see the arch of his naked back, the smoothness of his thighs... things he'd never thought about so specifically on a man before.
"No problem, Archie." David said after a moment of silence. They didn't speak for a moment, and then David, again. "How'd you know?"
Shrugging his still widening shoulders, Archie sighed. "It's just... girls always throw themselves at me, and sometimes they're really pretty and everything, but... there's nothing there. And once in a while, there'll be a guy who's like, my age, at one of my concerts who hangs out afterwards to talk to me, and I get really into the conversation, and I start saying things, and I don't want to leave, and I notice how wide their shoulders are, or whatever. I see the jawline or the stubble or whatever it is, and I like it." He explained.
David never did quite get the raw, open honesty that Archie let out whenever they talked. He couldn't help but grin, though. "You're a man who likes a little stubble?" He teased gently.
The younger man blushed, grinning in reply. "Shut up, Cook, I'm serious."
And before he could think about it, David Cook made a desicion that would change his relationship with the young crooner forever. And he didn't change his mind before speaking, even though he had second thoughts. And third. "Okay, Arch. You want serious?" He said, leaning toward the younger boy and beckoning him closer, too. "I've dealt with all that shit. I've read the fucking pamphlet on discovering if you're gay. I've gone through all the paces."
Archie's face was already changing. "Cook, are you... are you gay?"
David blushed, looking down at the table before realizing that this was something he'd come to terms with a long time ago. "The pamphlet don't lie, man."
"You're blushing! Aw, Cookie-"
"You know I hate that nickname." David replied with a roll of his eyes.
Archie just smiled. "What's not to like about Cookie? I think it's sweet." What Archie said next surprised David. It was a blurted phrase, almost too loud in the quiet resturant, and Archie was blushing again when he said it. "I miss you."
"You miss me?" David replied, resisting the urge to touch Archie's flawless young face. "I'm... I'm right here."
The younger shook his head, as if this wasn't what he meant. If David was to be honest with himself, he knew that he too missed his competitor and friend. "I miss you." Archie repeated. "The laughs, your stupid jokes, your smile..."
The previously mentioned smile was instantaneous and joyous and he couldn't wipe it off his face. "Archie, you know me better than almost anyone. You get me." But wherever he was going on that tangent, David never did finish. Archie's next words blurted from his lips once again, quiet this time, though. David almost had to strain to hear him, but he did. He knew he heard correctly, because Archie paled significantly.
"I think I loved you."
David stiffened, every muscle in his body tensed with surprise, before he was able to relax himself again. "And now you don't?" He questioned gently. He didn't want to prod, to scare away the beautiful man before him who had just confessed his love.
Archie's lips quivered like he was about to cry. David couldn't help but notice. He also couldn't help but think about the little sounds Archie would make when he felt David's stubble against his chest, or the way his breathing would sound when he slept. David was a fan of sounds. "I don't... I don't know."
"What's not to know?" David replied, pushing the thoughts of his younger counterpart completely out of his head. "I'd... I'd tell you what I've thought about with you, but-"
"Don't. Not yet." Archie replied, his thin, pale throat bobbing visibly with the stress of... something. David couldn't help but grin. "I'm... I'm only eighteen, Cook."
David couldn't help but remember that, by the time he was eighteen, he'd started drinking, screwing around with girls, and had even coaxed his first kiss with a guy out of Jared Hunter, a pretty blonde who played the drums in his high school band. But Archie was different. Archie needed his space, his time. "I know that when I see you, Archie, it makes stuff... better." David replied quietly, gazing down at his hands.
"Better?"
"You make me happier. That's all."
Archie's reply was soft. "Cookie-"
"I swear to God, David Archuleta-"
The younger boy let out a lighthearted giggle that made his companion smile. "Sorry." He said simply, letting himself go quiet. David was glad that he didn't have to defend himself or explain himself or talk about how he was maybe kind of in love with the younger man.
The pair was both silent for a long moment as the conversation that they'd just had sunk in for a minute. "You know what would make me happy?" Archie began.
"Nope."
"If we'd get out of here and grab some ice cream." Archie said simply. "Maybe go on a walk in a park somewhere. And then when you'd drive me home, which you would, if you wanted to make me happy, and once we were there, we'd sit awkwardly in your car for a minute before you kiss me."
David couldn't help but grin at that. Who could argue with that, after all? And before he knew it, he was leaning across the table toward Archie's ear and whispering huskily into it: "I'd do anything to make you happy."
A phrase that had made many a girl spread their legs for him, it only made David's young friend laugh again. Sometime, David would have to relieve Archie of a bit of that innocence.
