Summary: Character Study. Dominion both mental and physical. The moments in which Yugito forgets.
She forgot the way he towered above her. Or, more precisely, she forgot that she forgot. And it was not until she looked at her worldly leader that she remembered. Suddenly aware of the way he stood tall, conscious of the sheer, raw force of him. Cruelly reminded of all she would like to be mercifully oblivious of.
He looked at her, down at her, maybe not even unkind. It was the direction of that glance, downward, ever downward, that shook her. Down at her, into her.
She felt frail against him. Diminutive and compromised. Shattering as her weakness became obvious, the need to be strong, to sustain.
And so she did, desperate if one cared to look, like the last soldier on the losing side. It was pitiful - and it was Kakuzu who thought this - to watch that eloquent composure fracture, like mortar falling off decomposing walls, revealing the loam and crumbling bricks beneath. Rifts, ever spreading.
She knew that he was aware of all that was vulnerable in her, knew that he saw odd inclusions of strength, glistening sarcophagus full of fierceness. Confidence that was no conscious part of her, but the very essence of surviving. Dormant for now, spilling out like resin from wounded trees.
It was a shell, all of it, though. The nekomata scratching at the vitreous walls of her being, leaking through in places, all venom and voices in her head. Taunting her.
They were one in places, shared not only memories, but actual feelings. The cat a thing of in-betweens, something that loved the swirling grey of pre-dawns, all oxymora and paradoxes, whispering, ever whispering, to her.
She, Yugito, was caged, in understanding that irremediably defiled. Fading like something caught between walls constantly coming nearer. Things that might squeeze other things than life out of her.
She listened to the cat tell its eternal story of death and decay, looked at the dark, looming man walking ahead, restricted by all he stood for. An emperor. The demon a hierophant, her mind its realm.
