That's it, I'm getting a new UPS

Yeah so I've got two UPS units for my computer system. One for the monitor and the other for the computer. The monitor one isn't big enough to run the monitor and the computer and I don't even think it could run just the computer either. However the computer UPS which is bigger sometimes doesn't come on as fast as it should and causes my computer ( Read more... )

My old UPS was huge and could power a lot of things for a long period of time. The biggest fault with it was that when the power did go out, it would beep every ten seconds for hours until it's reserve was drained. I replaced it with a smaller model for my new computer and it no longer beeps so I don't know if it's really working.

The other day at the grocery store, I was called upstairs to look at a message on the computer screens. It read something like, "UPS is discharging." The tech guy happened to be in the store for another issue so I told him about it and he checked out the computers for me. Turns out it's a serious issue for the UPS to discharge and he told me that if I see a series of green flashing lights in the hub, I should call Store Support immediately. He's never seen this happen before but it could be big trouble.

A UPS discharge? Hmm, that's interesting. I don't see why it would do something like that, it's not like it would need to discharge itself from time to time to maintain the batteries because they all use lead acid batteries and as far as I know that's not something that has to be done. All they need is to have the proper water level in them and have distilled water added as need be if they aren't sealed and be kept charged and never run completely down and if they do for whatever reason then they must be charged up right away to minimize the damage by sulfication (spelling?). I think all UPS devices will shut off before they run the batteries too low though not just to protect the batteries themselves but because they must have a high enough voltage for the inverters to work with and put out the correct voltage on the backup system.

Yeah I know how that is, I've been pretty bussy with work and getting ready for college and all.

Oberlin is not too far away from Cleveland. I think it would be close to an hour and a half from me or something like that.
