Evil Ice Storm

I'm pissed off that I spent over 4 hours working on my generator trying to get it to work properly and failed to accomplish getting it to work properly when I needed it the most. I even changed the oil half way through working on it in the cold snow because the breather was outputting considerable amounts of steam that one might think I was ( Read more... )

Water in the oil is a sure sign that your head gasket has blown and you have the water getting into oil, and oil into the water. Hence your steam and such. In most cases this spells out a total engine rebuilt, unless you catch it early enough. ;-)

It's just a little 5 hp horizontal shaft engine. I had a plastic cover over it but one time in a big windy rain storm it got blown off and I think maybe some rain got into the oil filler cap around the side or something. It's an air cooled engine so there is no radiator with water in it, I should have mentioned that in my post.

I did have fully synthetic oil in it so hopefully that helped reduce engine wear due to the small amount of water in the oil but it's probably good that as soon as I noticed the steam that I shut it down and changed the oil.

Now the power is back on. It was off for about 45 hours.

For once we had power while everyone around us didn't. I hope yours comes back on soon.

Well it's finally back on now. It came on last night around 7:30 so it was off for around 45 hours. I'm glad it's back on now, I can actually breath in the house and not see my breath.
